DK2 FOV downgrade from DK1?

jrd3d

Sorry if there is already a topic for this that I couldn't find from doing a search, but I was wondering if the downgrade in the Field of View from the DK1 to the DK2 should be of any concern?
The DK1 states a Field of View of 110 degrees and the DK2 states a Field of View of 100 degrees.
I know it's only 10 degrees less, but does that mean that the edges of the screen will be more noticeable?

The rift was designed to offer the best VR experience at consumer price people, stop complaining about the quality if you want full 360* at 8k res with 0 latency 1000fps with photo realistic graphics prepare to pay out the ass, in the meantime enjoy your entry level dk2, its only going to get better. 🙂

You mean like how the DK2 improved on DK1's FOV? LOL...sorry, couldn't help it!

That's a good point. How entitled we all feel, that the tech has taken a step back (presumably with good reason), that we can complain about it when many of us are ordering products not meant for their hands (consumers not devs). On top of that, this is essentially new tech. This is new media. Neither of these things are smooth on the first iteration. New tech (even consumer versions) are always rough. Always.

I'm sure that screen was the sweet spot for Oculus to be able to incorporate all of the key technology in terms of performance, cost and availability. I've been using DK2 since Friday and decided to put DK1 on for kicks and run a couple of things....

DK1 fit my personal geometry better (big bonkers edit: honker - typing on phone lol) and I could get pretty close to max FOV. It is true that the outer periphery is larger if I forced my head in the thing.

But the quality and overall experience in DK1 is almost impossible to enjoy after having a real sense of presence in DK2. Don't get me wrong, the decrease in horizontal FOV is a bit of a tradeoff, but DK2 is so much better at VR it's insane to even compare them qualitatively. I feel like you guys are arguing about the Ferrari 550 you just received has a harsh ride compared to the 1987 dodge dart you had.

Yes, its a trade. Now go play with your Ferarri and don't look back. CV1 will be no compromise. It's going to be the best HAD (edit HMD thanks phone) the world has seen for gaming. The list of the guys making it is a who's who - and they have 2 bill+ to leverage. It's happening this time and DK2 is way cool.

Seems like a good time to explore the possibilities of backlight strobing on a riftup type of kit before getting too close to CV1 release to make it worth it.

The entitlement in this thread is astonishing.

Guys, do you honestly believe Oculus chose to lower the field of view, when they just as easily could have provided a larger field of view? No? Well, then maybe, it isn't so simple after all.
VR is, at this point in time, all about making compromises. And you've got to make an awful lot of compromises for a $300 product, which will only be manufactured in small quantities (compared to, say, smartphones; and even compared to smartphones, the DK2 is extremely cheap).

DK2 was all about positional tracking and low persistence, and they've delivered on these things. But why oh why didn't they also increase the field of view? Well, maybe it was simply not as high a priority compared to the other things. It certainly doesn't prevent developers from creating games and content for VR and becoming acquainted with VR.

Nice 😄 See people, now we just need more people getting their DK2's to give more accounts of this kind to start to confirm this

I guess all I want to know is if this will be fixed in CV1 and we'll have *at least* DK1's FOV in it, or if Oculus is going to cripple CV1's FOV even more than DK2's (since the performance problem will be even worse on CV1).

I don't see much point in a 1440p HMD if it's got some crippled 60 degree FOV or such.

Here's something to keep in mind, you are able to see the black, plastic edge of the lens cups on the DK1. At least I do, even when I put the lenses as close to the eyes as possible. And Because of that you only see the center of the screen with a lot of screen space around the visible areas. This is certainly the case because you can't see GUI elements if they are placed too far to the top or the side. I shouldn't have to explain that, but I guess it will help prove the point.

The DK2's lens cups are larger, so you will see less of the black plastic. (There are a thread where the sizes are measured, I am just not able to find it at the moment). So even if you almost see the edge of the screen, you will get more of your vision filled, than you got on the DK1.
