DK2 FOV downgrade from DK1?

Sorry if there is already a topic for this that I couldn't find from doing a search, but I was wondering if the downgrade in the Field of View from the DK1 to the DK2 should be of any concern?
The DK1 states a Field of View of 110 degrees and the DK2 states a Field of View of 100 degrees.
I know it's only 10 degrees less, but does that mean that the edges of the screen will be more noticeable?

I suspect this means CV1 will have lower FOV than DK1 as well (and maybe even lower than DK2) since the same problem is even worse there.

And while Oculus has stated that CV1 will have higher FOV, they never said which kit it would be better than, so they could easily make CV1 anywhere between DK2 and DK1 FOV and say "it's higher FOV than DK2!"

In any case, this is not good at all - people already talked about DK1 feeling like having ski-goggles on. That needs to be fixed, not intentionally made worse.

It also sets up a precedent for constantly decreasing FOV and backward-progress. What's the point of having a 4k screen if the FOV is 40 degrees?

How about we stop jumping to conclusions about every little thing, and talking as if Oculus is intentionally, if at all, lowering the FOV compared to DK1.

I guess I shall see for myself when my DK2 arrives. But I'm betting this is just another case of over-hype and too high expectations. As for the barrel distorted render looking smaller, I imagine it has more to do with the screen and lenses being physically different, and not at all representative of the perceived FOV.

They already admitted that was the case.

Where and when? I remember when they claimed the FOV would be slightly larger, not smaller.

I assumed the where and when was this thread when Brantlew came in and explained why the FOV was smaller on page 2... or did I miss something?

My apologies, I seem to have missed that post somehow.

By 4 degrees, and this was done as a hackjob by a 3rd party.

Oculus DK1: >90° horizontal FOV, >110° diagonal FOV
RiftUP! LCD: >86° horizontal FOV, >106° diagonal FOV

We actually got a worse result from Oculus.

Other than positional tracking, low persistence, better contrast and overall picture quality it's worse yes.

None of which have anything to do with the technical concerns cited on page 2 of this thread. Riftup was able to break through this technical barrier better than Oculus. Whether or not Riftup's screen was or was not as good a screen is not relevant. They pushed the same pixels and were able to deliver more FOV on an old DK1.

The rift was designed to offer the best VR experience at consumer price people, stop complaining about the quality if you want full 360* at 8k res with 0 latency 1000fps with photo realistic graphics prepare to pay out the ass, in the meantime enjoy your entry level dk2, its only going to get better. 🙂
