DK2 FOV downgrade from DK1?

jrd3d

Sorry if there is already a topic for this that I couldn't find from doing a search, but I was wondering if the downgrade in the Field of View from the DK1 to the DK2 should be of any concern?
The DK1 states a Field of View of 110 degrees and the DK2 states a Field of View of 100 degrees.
I know it's only 10 degrees less, but does that mean that the edges of the screen will be more noticeable?

I almost wonder if this thread is turning into an attempt to get people to cancel their orders so others can move up in line...

As a developer, I am patiently waiting for my DK2.

That's human-kind for ya! (You may well be on to something there)

& I respect that andrewtek.

But our brains are our operating systems - and just like any good operating system; often an update is required!!
At least the software in my head does anyway

That said... I do wish I didn't give away my DK1... I dare not say it was better but if you had positional tracking on a DK1 I would dare say it.

Get your DK1 back and add positional tracking to it:

Has anyone got to the bottom of why the preview models played at game conferences were not said to have this problem (Sorry can't read all the thread just now).

Actually, I remember hearing people say the FOV was smaller in Crystal Cove than DK1. It was even before they announced DK2. I'll look for posts and the video, but I remember watching it saying "Damn, how can the FOV be lower? Maybe it was the lense?"

Non taken 😄 I'm probably (hopefully) in the minority here. I also have been spoiled with having a (super expensive) Sensic HMD at my job to play with, which has " panoramic horizontal field of view more than 130 degrees."

My posts aren't meant to sound angry or extremely critical of Oculus. Just my reaction to DK2 vs DK1. I'm sure this won't be a problem on consumer release!

And agree that if you feel like you might want to cancel, then do so. I for one am extremely happy that I get to test official positional tracking! I was doing it with a Hydra before, and this just makes things so much better in terms of that 🙂

I've been obsessed with Oculus since day one like a good many people, and I can't believe that today I toyed with the idea of maybe cancelling my order, taking a $50 loos on the chin saving the rest of the money for CV1...

I am developing not just an impatient gamer with too much pocket money!
I'm just really worried that FOV has taken a back seat from now. After all Michael Abrash was recently quoted as saying that you can achieve presence with a relatively low FOV..I'll hang on as I'm fully behind OVR. But I have a suspicion that A Abrash claim will be welcomed by the ergonomics team ...

Unless you're developing, that is probably a good idea. It's been said before even by Luckey himself that only devs should have gotten the dev kit.

How one of those ridiculously expensive HMD compare to the rift, do they really offer much more inmersion? and in a scale 1-10 those HMD being 10 what number you give to DK1 and DK2.

In the case of immersion, the expensive HMDs are amazing. From a scale of 1-10 , I'd rate the expinsive HMDs 10 because, well these are the most advanced available now (I work in a government agency that uses these). The Oculus Rift, let's say with the FOV of DK1 and the resolution + positional tracking of DK2, I'd put it at 7/10.

What you need to realize, though, is that these expensive HMDs are being used for non-entertainment reasons, and aren't meant to be kept on your head for hours at a time and are absolutely heavy. Also the computers used to run these applications are monstrous. The HMD itself cost over $20,000 (I don't know the actual final price, since I don't have access to that info) and for what it does, the Oculus Rift is an amazing value.

I'd be completely surprised if Oculus don't put these other HMD companies out of business. They've been charging thousands upon thousands of dollars to do what Oculus is doing for $300. It's incredible.

The reason I give critical feedback about the FOV isn't just to complain, but because I want Oculus to succeed!

Talking about monstrous computer in a few weeks i will have acces to my school's research "PC's" and i was gived green light to "play" with them so i am going to plug the rift to see what happens, this are the specs of the computers

My Skool's BOINC PC
X4 intel xeon E7 8870 | Weird ass motherboard | X4 32GB ram
X7 nvidia Tesla K40 | X1 nvidia GTX titan black <<<<<<<<<<< here are going to plug the rift
6Kw* module cannibalised franken server PSU | 50$ used BenQ moniter
Lets cross fingers they let me use it
*My guess

Haha NICE! That's pretty sexy, if I do say so myself. I live near my old university and thought I'd be able to weasle my way into using their research computers using connections, but only students allowed :'(
