Also the computers used to run these applications are monstrous. The HMD itself cost over $20,000 (I don't know the actual final price, since I don't have access to that info) and for what it does, the Oculus Rift is an amazing value.
I'd be completely surprised if Oculus don't put these other HMD companies out of business. They've been charging thousands upon thousands of dollars to do what Oculus is doing for $300. It's incredible.
The reason I give critical feedback about the FOV isn't just to complain, but because I want Oculus to succeed!
Talking about monstrous computer in a few weeks i will have acces to my school's research "PC's" and i was gived green light to "play" with them so i am going to plug the rift to see what happens, this are the specs of the computers

My Skool's BOINC PC
X4 intel xeon E7 8870 | Weird ass motherboard | X4 32GB ram
X7 nvidia Tesla K40 | X1 nvidia GTX titan black <<<<<<<<<<< here are going to plug the rift
6Kw* module cannibalised franken server PSU | 50$ used BenQ moniter
Lets cross fingers they let me use it

Haha NICE! That's pretty sexy, if I do say so myself. I live near my old university and thought I'd be able to weasle my way into using their research computers using connections, but only students allowed :'(

The Titan black is a dual GPU card right?

Dang, I'm pretty sure I also would end up in DK1 > DK2 camp (haven't ordered DK2 since I'm travelling a lot atm) . It's not just one poster btw, but a bunch of respectable posters that I recognize by avatars (no trolls, kids or VRgins here but ppl that know their thing).
Doom3 on DK1 has this problem, that either you get limited FOV or a serious barrel distortion, so I know exactly how it feels to have a "screen strapped to your head" and how hard it is to shake off this feeling. We already know 20ms latency or less is crucial for presence. Let's state it loud and clear that 110' FOV is just is just as important 🙂

I have a DK2 and recently gave my DK1 to a friend and the FOV is smaller. But at the same time the DK2 doesn't have that weird binocular circle thing going on. Gosh I don't know the technical term for what the DK1 did but it felt like the convergence was just a little off. You could see transparent dark rings in the scene. The DK2 doesn't do that at all. But instead you definitely do see a fuzzy black box encapsulating the world. it's really not much more terrible than ski goggles but I still prefer to take my goggles off when skiing 🙂
That said... I do wish I didn't give away my DK1... I dare not say it was better but if you had positional tracking on a DK1 I would dare say it.
I feel like I'm in some weird bizarro world.

Oh good.
Performance gains over the 780 Ti seem pretty minimal for nearly twice as much though. I know it's not your money but...
Or I could also mind my own fucking business.
