DK2 arrived yesterday and was better than expected!

I think my expectations for the DK2 dropped a little given many reviewers complaining about the resolution, chromatic abberations, FOV, lenses, black smear, whatever lol. It took me probably 5 mins to get everything going and test the desk demo to see the camera view. When I put the rift on and saw it I had a "holy shit" moment. Mind you I used the DK1 a lot so it wasn't as if VR was new to me. I mean I just didn't expect the clarity to be what it was. Plus the colors were amazing. The DK1 always made me feel like I was kind of in fog. Also the FOV seems to not bother me at all. I can kind of notice the difference but when I'm moving around or plainly not looking for it, it kind of doesn't get seen.

So I did try probably around 20 more demos to get a good idea where it was at. I still was very impressed. The black smear was very noticeable on riftmax in certain places but the feeling of VR overwhelmed it. Also I left the plastic on the lenses at first because of the complaints of scratching. I never ended up taking it off because I don't notice it at all.

To cut the first guy off who's gonna say I have bad vision or something, I actually got lasik prior to getting the DK1. My eyes were and still are 20/14 and 20/17.

Bottomline: I still tell my friends to wait for the consumer release because it can be complicated and most people want a consumer device that just works and doesn't require some care taking and and look past perfect.

I on the other hand am very happy I got it and can't wait to hop in riftmax karaoke again on Thursday lol. I've been going through tutorials on unity and hopefully I can port my garbage, I mean game to the rift lol. In the meantime I'll be backing every good kickstarter I see 😄

One thing I never experienced with the DK2 was the black smear, I had already read complaints of it but before I used mine I increased the brightness by 5% in the Nvida control panel for the rift. The blacks still look very very nice but no smear.

Not sure why but after quite a few hours in the DK2 I haven't noticed any black smearing at all. Didn't make any brightness changes either.

That pretty much matches my initial experience, although it took me a bit longer to get my system to output video to the Rift. I was really worried with all the negative things I'd been hearing, and when I first got video working, I kind of agreed. Then I launched the demo scene and...WOAH. And so far I've encountered very little nausea with anything - not Helix, Lava, not really anything besides the older demos that don't support head tracking in DK2.

I only noticed the black smear one time, on the monitor in The Chair. Didn't see it anywhere else. I too left the plastic on the lenses, but wound up removing it because the plastic was getting foggy with the heat.

Rift definitely needs a lot of work before it will be a consumer product - like you said, it doesn't "just work" - but it is perfectly fine for my needs. Just wish I could get 3D videos working in Cineveo. I've been making 3D shorts since 2010 and want to watch them in Rift. I have them as SBS WMV files, but right now all I get is a blank white screen when I launch one.

White screen usually means missing codec. Cineveo worked fine for me in direct-to-rift mode with the k-lite v1060 (only tried mp4). Hard to find a download of k-lite that isn't full of malware though.

maybe the black smear is the result of something neurologically..

I find when looking up at a light then looking next to it that's dark on a light that has a bowl that covers the sides preventing the sides from getting light that there is a delay with the eye adjustment..

it's not instant, it's like lag but it can't be computer lag because its real life

u would think the eyes would be gradual linearly or instant but actually there is a delay

look at what I'm talking about by looking back and forth waiting like 2-5 seconds in between and u will see what I'm talking about
