Defining "presence"

With all these different opinions and misconceptions about what "presence" is, in the technical sense within the VR "science" scope, may it be possible for Oculus to issue a blog post addressing the subject? with a non ambigous definition, some historical context ('cos AFAIK it's not a new concept) and examples of what is NOT "presence".

I have to disagree, I really don't think immersion and presence are totally separate things.
The inner instinctive part of the brain isn't separate from the thinking brain.. they interact and influence each other.

When I dream, there's zero physical interaction influencing me, but I feel 100% presence. When Lumiere showed the train approaching the audience for the first time there was no physical influence on the audience but they felt enough presence to think it was going to break through the screen into the cinema (assuming that story isn't completely apocryphal). And that's what I mean when I say I've felt presence playing some FPSs on a monitor... it's not just immersion but the immersion helps achieve presence.

Conversely I think if the higher thinking levels of the brain know that the reality you're experiencing is virtual and not real, it influences instinct and lessens presence.

FOV, resolution, haptic feedback etc. and immersion are all ways to fight off the knowledge that the reality is virtual, in my opinion.

The reason we don't have a definitive explanation of presence might be because it has yet to be fully achieved. Once achieved (if ever), true presence will exist in memory as an actual physical experience and not even realized as a past virtual experience. That's the litmus test right there.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

That's the whole point. That's why I'm asking for a hint from the professionals.

And on that note...
