Did Oculus rip off Valve?

So according to this article, Oculus stole pretty much everything from Valve and are more or less doing everything wrong in regards to having an open VR platform. Does anyone know if this is correct? I must admit after reading the article I started thinking about selling my Rift and buying a Vive instead 😞

Me for the next year... :geek: VR4EVER!

No. And Alan Yates should just get over the fact that he wasn't picked with Abrash, Nicholls and Binstock to join the Oculus team, and stop spraying his sour grapes all over Twitter whenever he has a bad day. Alan, you just weren't good enough. Get over it.

It seems to me that the Valve prototype and almost every other modern consumer headset design is based on the optical paradigm that started with the pre-DK1 - single element lenses / large screen / software correction.

This is true, but don't bother telling the tin foil hat wearing morons that read an article to solidify their baseless argument.

I didn't want to have to divulge this, but Oculus did indeed wholly copy Steam in making the Rift.

Similarly, Valve wholly copied View Master in designing the QR Code room prototype.

Standing on the shoulders of giants, no doubt.

All I see is Valve trying to pour gasoline onto this week's drama.  Wouldn't surprise me if they were the ones who got Tim Sweeney to send his whole "Second Class Citizen" tweet during the Rift's launch.

If this turn a war like Apple vs Samsung or Sony vs M$ is Oculus fault, I dont understand the profit of using DRM. But dont surprise me really, still a bussiness market strategy.

So in your opinion Oculus should just give up the idea of their own platform/store and give in to the Steam overlords?

Did Microsoft Rip Off Apple?

Did Apple Rip Off Android?

There is usually some sharing of ideas, whether that sharing is voluntary or not, in Industry. Insider trading, espionage, etc. The real thing to worry about is that even if a company like Valve or Apple or Android were to give all their source code and documentation to people whining on a forum, those people wouldn't be able to do a damn thing with that information. They would try to stand on the shoulders of a giant only to fall to their face before making it half-way up the cankle.

Some people are smart enough to capitalize on information gained; others start controversial threads on the Internet.

Special note to the guy in this thread who quoted this against Oculus:
"Standing on the shoulders of giants, no doubt."

That line comes from the movie Social Network, where Zuckerberg said it to everyone else... even though it was Zuckerberg who stole the idea of Facebook from someone else. lol

To complete the circle it's worth noting that the movie stole it from Sir Isaac Newton:

"What Descartes did was a good step. You have added much several ways, and especially in taking the colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."

...who stole it from John of Salisbury:

"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours."

...who no doubt stole it from Alan Yates.
