Digital Combat Simulator (DCS), the DK2 Enabled Flight Sim That Flew under the Radar at E3 2014

http://www.roadtovr.com/e3-2014/

Not much detail, but that it works with DK2 is great news for flight sim fans!

The company partnered with Oculus VR to present the latest version of their hyper-realistic simulator platform on the DK2; an early prototype demonstration allowed viewers to be placed in a selection of realistic recreations of extreme fight planes—their cockpits lovingly recreated and able to be experienced through the VR Headset.

This early glimpse at the new software build showed the promise of what ultra-realistic flight simulation in a VR head-mount offers. Though the demonstration did not have any ground-targets, or air combat, the flight model still put the DK2 through its paces.
But... but... but... I just NEED to know about the Baba! The Baba has me hypmotized!

May I ask in the Demonstration that you were lucky enough to do, was it a DK2 that you used and were the instruments readable and usable from a normal sitting position. Appreciate you had to lean in to read the smaller writing on the gunsight.

As it was reported in the interview - and you can see from the images - this was a DK2 demonstration at E3, @Cowboy10uk.

The visuals were okay, as I said text reading needed me to lean forward - I was also still concerned by the screen door on the DK2 - but all of the developers tell me this will not be an issue on CV1...

Because the resolution is shared across a single panel there will be issues, but for the consumer flight-sim this seemed a very good approximation.

The Geko Systems chair seems like an interesting way to simulate sustained g-forces also.

Maybe someone will come up with a lower cost vest and pants that can apply pressure to certain areas to simulate g-forces. The air bladder vests seem too noisy, maybe it can be done with servos.

For flying only, the cloud-flyer seemed pretty good. Maybe not accurately simulating all forces but has the benefit of working with any game since it doesn't need any special driver to get game data to translate into movement.

Thankyou for getting back to me. Great inteview and writeup.

I was hoping the DK2 would allow for the instruments to be usable, IE I can read them enough to fly safely and in IFR conditions. I'm thinking if I still need to lean closer to be able to read them, that may make it slightly difficult in tricky conditions. Screen door effect, I'm not overly concerned about, when concentrating I'm unlikely to even notice it.

While the 3D effect and the immersion the Rift already provides is fantastic, and now the head tracking has 6DOF which will make all the difference, I'm starting to get concerned that the visuals may not quite be upto the standard to be able to test the rift properly with flight sims.

I appreciate they would never be upto CV1 standard, but I do require a readable text from a normal sitting position, to be able to do my project.

Do remember that DCS will soon have Edge which should make the visuals much better. This should greatly increase the visuals in the rift.

SInce hotas was mentioned, I just saw this the other day and thought it was pretty neat for a cheap hotas setup if you like to do things on the cheap.

You probably have to register to see the pics but from what I gather this guy (built_to_last) hacked up a logitech rumble pad 2 that sits on the floor and runs a cardboard tube up from the one joystick and made some cardboard rudder pedals and cardboard throttle with the pots from the controller. He was more interested in using it for helis but I never really thought how easy it would be to make your own hotas with rudder pedals just by hacking up a cheap gamepad.

Lol! Talk about DIY. I just bought a bell 206 ranger. Don't forget prepar3d. . http://www.prepar3d.com David smith over at Lockheed probably going to get that title working on his 150 fov device.
mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4123 I am looking into that LEEP VR I lack practical 3d knowledge, I have found some good links, but I am not sure if they are the ones you were talking about. Would you mind direct linking me to them?

Yes that's true, and edge will be stunning but surely the limitation will be the OR screen and the Res rather than the ingame graphic settings?

If higher graphical settings in game will allow the instruments to be usable in the rift, then fantastic. Game on.

OK so what do I need to do to get DCS working with DK2 and an ATI card? Is there a DCS source out there?

From what I have read it appears that DCS does not run on the DK2 with AMD gpu! I tried to run it with every conceivable option, but all i got is a black screen.

Overclocked 3770k and a GTX 780. I can't manage 60 fps on a 2D monitor. How the hell does anyone get 75 fps on this thing in 3D.
