I recently got some new headphones for my standard gaming and decided to try the free trial of Dolby Atmos. Seems very good and just wondered if the Rift headphones and games would work with it too.
The option is there in the Windows settings for the Rift headphones just not tried it. Wondered if anyone else had, or if theres a hardware reason why using it wouldn't make any difference?
There is no need to use virtual surround systems like Dolby Atmos with your Rift. Those are made without head position in mind. With Rift you have added head tracking and the Oculus audio SDK uses this for perfect audio placement.
I actually use the Oculus audio SDK tools in my music production because it's amazing for placing instruments in a mix. (since you can mimic/set the Rift's position in there)
Games need a Dolby Atmos stream for it to work good. It's an alternative to the Oculus audio SDK. The software samples the 7.1 or whatever Dolby Atmos stream to stereo format. Since Oculus games use Oculus SDK which are already mastered for stereo, Dolby Atmos is not needed. Oculus games don't have a Dolby Atmos stream anyway.
Oculus games are already very well mastered and have very good spatial sound. I think for specific VR game usage it's probably better then Dolby Atmos.
Rift games can already take advantage of spatialized audio in the Oculus SDK, which is much better suited for VR gaming than traditional surround sound designed for speaker systems. Not every game may use it, as it's up to the developer, but I believe a good number do. I bought the Dolby Atmos for my BeatsX Bluetooth earphones. It is amazing. For Rift and Steelseries Arctis 5, it has no gain but negative effect. Highly recommend to disable it. It only effective for Stereo headset/earphones.
