Done With Meta

I can no longer recommend Meta devices to anyone. I purchased a Quest 3 for around $500—a perfectly functional device. Meta then released a software update that broke it. I sent it in and received a refurbished replacement, which had the same issue plus a faulty battery. After switching to beta software and performing a factory reset, I managed to fix the problem myself.

In the end, Meta essentially took my perfectly healthy device and left me $500 out of pocket. When I reached out to Meta support requesting a proper replacement, they refused, citing the warranty, and had the audacity to ask for more money for yet another refurbished device.

But hey, if I spend $335 they will extend my warranty by 3 months. Plus I can get another broken device!

All these years I've been so worried for the constant updates to my dear Rift CV1, but nothing really happened (ok, did lose Touch tracking in Unity games last year after an update, but Meta was quick to fix it) - and then Meta's annoying updates finally do go totally wrong - and hit Meta's current most popular hmds the hardest, what gives...

My Valve Index is almost never updated - in 5 years, maybe 3 or 4 times (mostly for base stations and controllers, maybe once for the hmd). Sony also very rarely updates the PSVR2.

Meta should never force so many updates on customers. I've yet to see any update provide great and positive changes to my Rift CV1. Had the device for soon 7 years, and have received many firmware updates.

Also Meta's games work the worst - several awesome games like Landfall and Edge of Nowhere are no longer working at all - and several like Stormland can no longer be purchased. Many games now are being marked as not complying with Meta's policies - but surely game devs cannot constantly change their old games whenever Meta gets new ideas, and it seems Meta is constantly changing things. Btw, Meta just sent me an email that cloud save support will be terminated affecting games like Stormland, Phantom Covert Ops, Medal of Honor: Above & Beyond and more. Why do that? Are these cloud saves really a problem?

All my Steam VR games, even the old ones from 2016-2017 still work flawlessly. No issues with cloud saves, no issues with suddenly not complying with Steam's policies etc.

Destroying a hmd like the Quest 3 with a forced update, warranty or not, and then not taking the full responsibility - is extremely bad customer support. 2c.

You switch to a newer build, something past v71, often the "Public Test Channel" and then factory reset the device.
