FOVE O VR

Looks like the FOVE shaping up for release soon. FOVE O is different because of the use of eye tracking they're going to use in their HMD. If everything works out, then we could see more future HMD start adding eye tracking within their software.

I don't know why they're so secretive about the type of lens - fresnel or not fresnel? I've enquired about it.

I said to the developer I won't buy any headset that has fresnel lenses until the 'godrays' problem is sorted (I try to be helpful in my enquires).

does anyone have a schematics of the Lens used on the rift, dimensions and its shape?

Received reply:

'We
are also using fresnel lenses for the FOVE 0. As a result, we are able
to benefit from its unique capabilities, but unfortunately are also
faced with its downsides - most evidently the 'godrays' you mentioned.
We are looking into solutions, but - as of yet - can't make any
guarantees.

That's a bummer, but not too surprise about it. The FOVE seems like a good middle ground between the Rift and Samsung VR though depending on their price on release. I'm the most excited about the eye tracking though. If it works like it should, this is the device that will test with it. Hearing good reviews on how well it preforms visually might open up some big doors either way for all the HMDs.

Yes, it seemed very promising, the perfect toy to play with until the release of CV2. I was set to place a pre-order. but if I haven't purchased CV1 because of lens-flares I'm hardly going to jump in early for FOVE O. Just have to wait and see.

Meh- I think the lens-flare is a bit over blown. Software will adjust for it over time so it wont be as bad (and a ton of software is already doing that). I do wonder how FOVE will stand the test of time though. Right now, once the Oculus releases their track controllers - it will set the stander of what a VR company will have to have. FOVE is just now releasing their HMD. It will be a long while before they release a track controller along with it.

Makes you wonder if they will just sell their eye tracking technology instead if it does well?

This is the only new high-end (?) HMD on the near horizon, and with over 40% more pixels than Rift/Vive I was hoping
to use it to watch 2D/3D video, so the fact that it might be limited in the
choice of games doesn’t bother me. Apparently lens-flares are more troublesome viewing
video, especially in a ‘void’ environment, than in gaming.

I’m sure they’ll make more
money from their eye-tracking tech than selling VR headsets - Fove has limited
exposure at the best of times. It’s pretty certain that eye-tracking is the way
forward, even if they make a poor job of it.
