Facebook’s Oculus Looking to Invest in Location-Based Virtual Reality

Facebook’s virtual reality (VR) unit Oculus is getting ready to get out of the house: The subsidiary is looking to embrace VR centers and arcades in malls and movie theaters, and has plans to strike deals with producers of location-based VR content. Ultimately, Oculus wants to use location-based VR to get more consumers interested in buying VR headsets.

Oculus has yet to publicly detail its plans for location-based VR, but the Facebook subsidiary used its Oculus Connect developer conference in San Jose, Calif., last week to plant the seed for a move in the location-based entertainment space. Oculus head of experiences Colum Slevin used his talk at the conference to highlight a number of location-based VR experiences, and the way these experiences could promote headset sales.

Would be good If you gave an opinion on that 🙂 .. Since you are, you know, our OOH Chief in residence!
Core i7-7700k @ 4.9 Ghz | 32 GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance @ 3000Mhz | 2x 1TB Samsung Evo | 2x 4GB WD Black
ASUS MAXIMUS IX HERO | MSI AERO GTX 1080 OC @ 2000Mhz | Corsair Carbide Series 400C White (RGB FTW!)

Be kind to one another 🙂

Wow, thanks @LZoltowski - very kind of you. I would stick with the Digital Out-of-Home Entertainment (DOE) term as it seems that this is being used, but also we see OOH and even LB-VR.

Fundamentally, this is an example of the Facebook VR executive teams influence following the previous management departure. They have redressed some of the mistakes, and made moves to embrace the LBE scene and the obvious opportunity that brings to sales and promotion outside of the home. Agreements in this vein I have posted here on the forums include Nomadic, SPACES and obviously The VOID deal are the most noteworthy, but there are other smaller deals in the works.

This move looks to be the beginning of something more dedicated, and OVR has been making olive branch moves to all of us in the DOE sector, for which we are grateful that they are prepared to redress the previous failing. I think that once we have seen more progress, we will be seeing a lot of OQ in LBE venues next year - and even can hope to see a dedicated version of the CV1 for LBE deployment..... oh whoops we already have  B)

It is! I wonder how they managed to get it not to obstruct the tracking LED's .. or it could be a custom tracker designed for a large space?
