Facial tracking

Sooooo, today I was reading about the MMO EQnext, and I noticed two awesome features.

The first is rift support. The part I want to focus on here is head tracking. The concept of an mmo where we can see characters looking around is awesome. Watching a friend glance over their shoulder at you to exchange a few words, maybe make sure you are still following them, that would be a whole new level of multiplayer immersion.

The second is facial tracking. The game will use your web cam to match your characters expression to your own. If you tell a joke, you can literally see your friend raise an eyebrow and look at you with disdain...

The problem here is the two technologies seem mutually exclusive... 😐

I guess you could try positioning your webcam so that it's in a certain angle in order to make your mouth visible. You could then guestimate the facial expression based on your mouth alone (because it would be pretty creepy if only your mouth moved and the rest of your face was "dead").

Yea, seems like the only possibility at the moment. Hopefully VR headsets will be small enough in the future to show some brow.

maybe the software can simply emulate the movements.

i mean, it may not be 100% accurate but does it need to be?

Camera for what the rift doesn't cover, pressure sensors for the muscles around the eye and nose areas which could identify the muscle movement of all the upper face.

It's completely doable to put IR micro-cameras inside the Oculus Rift. One guy even did a rudimentary attempt at it in order to test eye tracking (http://www.itu.dk/research/eye/?page_id=671).

Another possible solution, though still further in the future, are bi-directional OLEDs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z31ngu5l4ds&t=20s)
