Factory reset setup without controllers

Wrong place ? Apologies. Just got a quest 2, sans controllers. Why ? Cheap. All that I was going to do, initially at least, was subscribe to Holofit, and not use controllers. Problem : you can't get past setup without BOTH Controllers ( currently £160 in the UK. Yay !! ).

Several "fixes" on the net, all have been shutdown by firmware,or wholesale app changes.

Thank you, Meta, for endearing yourself to me. I should have listened to the naysayers.

Regardless, anyone know if this situation is going to change anytime soon, what with Meta now licensing out to other firms, etc. ? Or are we still there for the taking?

I like tech and will pay for good tech if required. The failure rates on these controllers is shockingly high though. Sellers on eBay are selling 10/20/30 batches of faulty ones.

I could get round this by borrowing a set, for now.

No doubt, this will also be seen as a loophole and shut down at some point.

@AV02  unfortunately you're mostly right in that there's no way to set up the headset without controllers.

But there is this from the interwebs

'don't know if you sorted this but have just got round same problem and can now play games from steam at least. make sure headset is connected to wifi - do it from smart phone app. then also from smart phone app you can launch meta web browser, this will open in the headset that was stuck on pairing controller screen. click on settings in browser, in security section there is something about pattern gestures, click on the square with an arrow on the right and that will take you to proper headset settings. Here you can turn on hand gestures and also run quest link, which should pair it with your pc. next screen will tell you need to pair controllers again but if you now launch a game from steam it should work. also you can plug a usb a to c converter with a bluetooth mouse dongle into the side of the headset and use your mouse in the browser, doesn't work on the quest link menu page though. i think you have to run quest link everytime - when i turn mine on now it goes straight to the hand gesture settings page, so is just couple of clicks.

Thanks so much for that one. I missed it on my trawl through the internet! I don't play steam, but may be an option. A friend will be lending me his controllers to get past the setup, but don't want to rely on him everytime there is a firmware update, etc.

I'll look into it.

Thanks

once you get it set up with your friends controllers, and enable hand tracking, you'll be able to use the Q2 as normal, even if you have updates. You'll only need controllers again if you factory reset the headset.

Ah, good. I did find some posts that said I wouldn't need the controllers again, unless, as you say, I factory reset. So should be ok. This hasn't stopped me from perhaps considering getting the controllers in the future. Just annoyed that I am being forced to get 2 now, when I may then put them in a drawer somewhere and never use them again. A big outlay for one use!!

yeah, the whole concept of needing the controllers to set the device up when it already has a hand tracking feature is a complete nonsense, but then meta knew that the kids would punch walls and TVs and then have to pay a stupid price for a new controller just to keep the headset working.

There was someone on reddit who set up a Q2 with two xbox controllers, but it seemed like a lot of hoops to jump through to activate the headset.
