Finger "tracking". Is it really?

From what I've read in the reviews coming out of E3. the finger tracking is nothing more than a touch sensitive pad on a button. When a particular pad cannot detect touch, the in-game finger associated with that particular pad is displayed.

This explains how a thumbs up is done, even though the thumb is not inside the Touch sensor ring. You lift your thumb off the stick, the lack of touch is detected, and the in-game thumb goes up.

Best I can tell, this is another case of good software. Toybox running on Vive would be pretty much the same, minus the finger sensors of course.

That is the point. Great hardware disappears and lets the software shine.

Yeah, so you wouldn't get all the random pointing and thumbs up emotes when just trying to interact with the software in a normal manner.

Yup. I've been trying to stress that for months now with so many people worrying about this number or that. The hardware specs are at the point now where the software is all that matters.

Has anyone actually been reporting accidental thumbs up or pointing? I would think there are different degrees of sensitivity to the sensor.

Actually, I would probably train myself to keep my fingers on the buttons to keep this from happening. This wouldn't be the first time I adapted to a new control scheme.

I was just thinking about this. It is pretty easy to keep your fingers on a button without pressing it. Then you would decide to pick up the finger to do the emote. That actually might work quite well. You would just need to train yourself to keep your finger on the button until you wanted to perform the emote.

Yes! We need a good hands-on review from the community!

I can't wait for the tested review. they seem really knowledgeable and have tested everything so they're my measuring stick right now

From the Ars Technica review:
"Sensors in the ring are what the Oculus Touch controller uses to track finger movements, though this feature was a little touchy in our demo. While the position tracking of our hands in virtual space was very fine and precise, finger tracking seemed to snap between an "open" and "closed" position without much refinement. What's more, aside from the thumb and pointer, the three other fingers only moved as a single unit in virtual space. The reaction to finger movements often felt just slightly delayed in the virtual world as well."

Soo...maybe they're not touch sensitive? Now I'm confused!

Dammit, Oculus! This is what happens when you half ass a reveal!
