First time HOTAS, which one?

Alrighty folks, as there are a few flying sims out there I thought I should probably add one of these to my setup. After playing a driving sim with a steering wheel and VR headset there is no going back to controller, so I presume a hotas will be similar for flying sims.

Ive never used one before and was wondering if would worth getting a cheaper one to start with to see how it feels or just get a decent one straight away. Im not a major flight sim player but id like to keep trying them as they are great in VR.

Ive picked out these 3 to see what your thoughts are...

Thrustmaster T-Flight £32.99 Would this give me enough of a feel to see if its worth putting in another £100-200?

Saitek X52 Pro £129.99 Looks solid and the middle ground of the two

Saitek X56 Rhino £219.99 Looks an absolute beast but is it aimed more at serious flight simmers? (Released in about a week)

Any advice?

Ordered the T Flight, will see how I get on with it. If its anything like using a wheel and pedals for racing games then I will more than likely upgrade soon.

Cheers for all the input folks.

In case you haven't seen it already, here's why one guy advises folk not to buy the new Saitek X-56:

It is really hard to suggest a Hotas. I own a x-55 Rhino (second one - first died). It is an excellent Hotas and an absolute joy to use with elite dangerous. The problem: It is quite expensive and quality is horrible wich does not go together well. The warthog lacks a z axis and costs even more. The CH flightstick and throttle would be great but lacks buttons for VR. The cheaper variants work but they are not as precise and nice to use.

It really is just a weighing of pros and cons: There is no perfect Hotas out there.
To me the X-55 came closest and I enjoy it. One allways fears it will break down though. :open_mouth:

I ended up ordering the Flight T as it was a small investment to see how I get on as ive never used one before. Its out for delivery today so il see what I think of it and using a hotas in general.

I was just having a search to see about integrating my G27 pedals into the setup and came across this thread. I like the idea of being able to map buttons to the gear block too, that might make up for the fewer buttons on the Flight T.

I am going to add a couple of extensions to my wheel stand to mount the Flight T either side of the wheel. so the pedals and gear block will be in a good position too.

There are plenty of buttons on the t-flight hotas x, if you use one or more of them as a modifier button(s).  I use button 8 as one and just holding it down offers the rest of the buttons as additional options.  Multiple and even Combinations of modifiers should allow more than enough to preclude the need to ever let go of the stick.

I think ive binned using the wheel for now, for one I dont think there is enough on the cable to sit either side of the wheel.

I only had a quick mess about with it on Elite but I dont think it automatically mapped correctly. Is there a programme I need to install, I seen it has pre sets but I didnt have time to try anything out or read up on it.

It might automatically map some of the controls, but it isn't too hard to add more or change the existing ones.  There are some schemes already on the web and they'll give you some ideas, but you will probably want to evolve your own, for what's good for you.

If you google images for t-flight hotas x and elite dangerous, you will probably find at least a good starting point.

Thanks bud, I think the problem was when I first plugged it in it was set to ps3 so I just switched to pc, when I unplugged it then replugged it after changing to pc it was properly mapped in elite. I got someone elses suggestions with the printout of the layout but when I went into the controls it was a bit overwhelming there is just so much!!

I just tried out a couple of training missions to get a feel for it just on the monitor so I can see what buttons im pressing and I found it quite hard, will take  bit of getting used to.

On a side note once you go VR theres no going back. I only played on the monitor so I could get a feel for the controls while being able to see the buttons etc. and it was mince lol

I've heard the CH throttle and flight stick are some of the best.    They are kind of ugly, and don't have flashing lights, LCD displays, or little chrome switches.  But for VR, that shouldn't matter too much.  Right?  Anyway, I was thinking of going with these.
