I'm sure many of us have already downloaded and watched the first episode of Will Smith's The FOO Show (not THAT Will Smith) and wound up wondering, "Hey, how come there's still just this one episode? Are they ever going to make another?"
Well, apparently that's up to the VR community! I got an email from their mailing list today, announcing the kickstarter to fund the show's First Season.
Not exactly sure how many episodes that will be in total, but from the looks of it, access to the final show won't be free. A pledge of $20 or more guarantees a redemption code to get access to the first season of episodes once they're made, on your choice of either SteamVR or Oculus Home. Looks like they also plan to expand to PSVR and Mobile VR in the future, but that'll be a while after the Oculus and Steam releases. Of further interest, they mention plans for a 2D monitor, mouse-and-keyboard edition as well.
Don't know what The FOO Show is at all? Never watched the free episode that's already available?
Well basically, it's a talk-show hosted in VR, with Will Smith and game developers as his guests puppetting virtual avatars of themselves on the set of either a virtual studio or scenes taken from their game. They discuss all sorts of behind-the-scenes type stuff, pick up and goof around with game props, and the best part is... you're there with them! Also free to rummage through the game props! In fact you'll probably just be half-listening to them while you do so!
Okay, that's a terrible description, but.. if you like behind-the-scenes game development stuff, just go download the first episode and see what it's like for yourself. Ironically, the existing episode is about Firewatch, a game that EVERYONE wanted to see in VR but sadly never (to my knowledge?) received any official support. I mean, there's always VorpX I guess, but aside from that you can consider this your only chance to see the ranger station in glorious, immersive VR, while a handful of floppy-handed polygonal people pick over its contents.
(again, better than I make it sound)
It's hard being the voice of reason when you're surrounded by unreasonable people.
