GTX 1080 revealed!

Nvidia is live-streaming a reveal event to show off the new GTX 1080 tomorrow night (Friday May 6 9pm EDT). (Source)

I know a lot of us here have been waiting for the Pascal line-up, due to the graphics-power-hungry nature of VR. If the performance increase is significant, I'm going to go ahead and upgrade my GTX 980. I have a second PC that I recently built that's using an old GTX 660 Ti, so it will take the 980 when my main box gets upgraded.

Anyway, just thought you guys would like to know!

Due to exchange rate, demand/availability and price gouging, the 1080 is likely likely going to cost about the same as its name in dollars, in Canada. Looks like minimum $1000 CA for the founders edition, and likely more. There's already a Reddit feed about preorders and what is being asked to reserve. It's pretty crazy that people will pay this, but GPU fever has struck. God help those desperate to get it if there's limited availability. Who knows what people will pay. I'll wait to see what AMD is going to offer, and for the initial clamor to be over, before I shell out anything.

Benchmarks are odd..

I have same 6700k cpu.

Firestrike 980Ti = 15069
Firestrike 1080  = 16794

Heaven 980 ti = 85fps
Heaven 1080 = 155fps ??? (cough, bullshit)

How does it get nearly double in Unigine benchmark?

Yes the 1080 has a nice performance upgrade, but it may not be worth upgrading from a 980ti for general gaming,  BUT what people are forgetting is the possible VR optimizations in these new gpu's that could completely blow away the 980ti.  The question is what kind of hoops do developers have to jump thru to access these VR optimizations.  Some say,  only DX12 and NVGameWorks can apply, but I'm not so sure.  Since there is new hardware on these 1080s to accomplish VR optimizations like multi projection, it could be accessible by a knowledgeable coder.

That's exactly what I'm waiting to find out. Pointless having theoretical performance if no developer uses it.

I'm not jumping on the Founder's Edition for a higher price, I'll wait and see what EVGA comes out with using their own cooling solution instead. Yeah, we'll still end up paying higher than the US--probably just like the Rift, they'll be $849 CAD and up, even though the exchange rate is a little better now than it was when the Rift was priced.

So now there are a few review about for the GTX 1080 and it's looking about 20-25% faster than a 980Ti on desktop gaming, but so far I've not seen a review with VR performance. Are there any about? Really that's the only thing I'm interested in at this stage. My 980 Ti is more than capable at 1440p, But VR would be great if there was a large performance boost. i.e. does Single Pass Stereo work?

They talk it up as being "up to 2x faster than the GeForce GTX TITAN X for VR Applications."

If true it would be a no brainer for me.

it won't be a magic button that doubles the fps of anything VR, it'll have to be turned on and supported in each application. I expect it to be like SLI.

The benchmarks are out, and it looks like the 1080 is 50% or more better than the 980.

For sure, I'm trading in my 980's day one.

Just read the review on PC Gamer... looks very promising. Haven't seen any VR-specific benchmarks yet.
