GeForce GTX 1000 series?

Hi all

I was always hoping to have the Rift CV1 and the new generation GeForce GTX 1000 series launch at the same time. Now it seems I have to invest in a 1.5 years old graphics series and pay the exact same amount it cost about 1 month after it launched back then, because of their fixed pricing. I must admit I have such a hard time agreeing to this, that I'm considering some sort of workaround to fill in perhaps 2 months from receiving the Rift CV1 to receiving my Geforce GTX 1070. What are you guys doing? Are you buying such an old graphics card, when you know the next generation is right around the corner, will cost the same and probably have way more performance aswell as increased graphics quality?

I still don't know what I'm going to do so I hope this thread might clear it up for me.
Me for the next year... :geek: VR4EVER!

I was under the impression Pascal isn't going to be released until Q3 2016.

Too long for me so I just bought a 980 instead. Excellent card and should be enough for the lifetime of CV1.

Well the 980 ti VR edition was announced so I doubt that they will discontinue it so early after release

Nvidia normally runs 18 month cycles on their video cards so I would not be surprised to see an end of Q1/Q2 release for the 10X0 series.

Question is do you risk it, do you think they will lower the price of the 980 and 970 or just discontinue those cards weeks before the 10x0 is announce and wait for stock to deplete.

When I purchased my 660 TI the 570 was about the same speed but just went end of life no price drop ect.

I am personally going to wait until I have a tracking number for my rift and buy the best 400$ card that I can buy.

The GTX GP100 is expected to be released first half of 2016, so Q1 and Q2 somewhat. You will probably see Third party GTX GP100 serie cards coming out in Q3, 2016 and the Ti versions late Q4 2016 or Q1 2017.

guys, i'm not sure, but i've read on toms hardware (if i remember correctly) that the price of those cards is supposed to be... lets just say "big" on the line of a titan x ... just to say....
Oculus rift has been build with a 970 in mind, soo, a 980, or a 980ti will make it work it at full power with no effort.
Save your money for the CV2,, THAT will require a 10x0 serie for sure 🙂

I've managed for now to calm the urge to get something now, as going with the rift means for me getting a new card 980+. Well, I'm liying, I got ED and ordered an X55 to replace my old sim days' MS Sidewinder 2. Damn Hotas are hard to find nowadays... I also haven't preordered Rift yet to also help in that.

I don't feel like wasting 400eur in a soon outdated GPU. Pascal seems cool, and maybe they put some VR features that make it even cooler. Also have to buy USB 3.0 cards because of my ASMedia mobo, have a 2500k,... so also considering a new rig. That sums up and its a ton of cash. I can pay it, and sure I'll do it, but I want to know better what I would get for it.

But I really won't resist if I see an used 970 for 200eur. 😄
Soon upgrading to Ryzen

It won't be. There not just going to increase the price of there entry and mid level cards just because it has a new chip.
The 1070 or whatever it name will be, will most likely be around the same price range as the 970 is right now, maybe a slight bit more. The same counts for the other cards.

I am hoping that liquid VR from AMD works out well, I currently have crossfire 290x's and one per eye would keep me safe for a good while.

Either way if it doesn't I am past spec on one card.

My next PC upgrade will probably be CPU, waiting for the AMD zen processors.

I've been seeing a lot of people guessing late 2016. These guys seem to think early 2017 is also possible. I'd bet money it wont be in a the next two months.

I'm in the same boat. Originally I was going to hold out for Pascal and try to get by for a few months with my 660 Ti, but I didn't pre-order an Oculus for a sub-par experience 😉

Hoping Pascal comes out early, but doubting it does. I'd much rather wait and pay $600 for a 1080 than spend $300 today on a 970 that uses nearly two year old tech.

I figure the worst case scenario, I'll buy a last minute 970 and use it until either 2nd gen Pascal comes out (like the 500 and 700 series) or Volta.

I wonder how well a 970 is going to handle Eve in VR. How low will one have to dial down the graphics settings to maintain 90fps at 1200p per eye in that game?

VR needs SLI badly. It seems like trying to run Rift games at high/ultra quality (heck, maybe just High with a few Mediums) is probably going to be a 1080Ti minimum if you can't use two cards. This could be why more current VR games look similar to Superhot rather than Eve.

My SLI 780Tis should be able to handle the Rift pretty well, but only one will not provide anywhere near what I expect from my investment. Spending another $700+ for a single Pascal GPU that probably will also not get me where I want to be in VR (and CERTAINLY will not for traditional games, as it is very unlikely to exceed SLI 780Ti performance) has me in a tough spot.

It isn't that I am adverse to spending money. If Nvidia SLI profiles was expected to work anytime soon (if ever, cyber's recent posts on the subject has me more doubtful each day) and my cards didn't provide the experience I wanted, I would buy two 1080Tis, or possibly two Pascal Titans. However, only one of those cards would either be a downgrade or at best a side-grade for traditional games, and still unlikely to be enough horsepower for Ultra setting VR games.

We need SLI ASAP. Otherwise the Rift is starting to sound like it might not really be worthwhile until Volta.

I made a few post on the forum to explain to people why SLI can't work well with VR. Saying so for the people asking why on that thread.

The pascal generation will come with a new bridge at 60GB/s that solve the hardware limitation making SLI not practical for VR ( currently, we get something like 3-4GB/s in practice killing all gain possible ).

Meh, you could simple have the card render more than the normal view as well. For example, the 1st card could render the first 100 degree of view and the other would render the boxes around that for around the same rendering frames allowing faster movement of the head to be predicted and over all increasing performance ... again.. nothing a dev should have to worry about as this would be something the API would take care of ~ but wishful thing I guess:)
