Generally disappointed

I received the Quest 2 as a gift.   I've had a chance to focus exclusively on it as my PC is out.  I am pretty much disappointed with it as a stand alone device.  It feel like a pre-beta demo, a proof of concept.

The only value is in Echo VR.  If, and only if, Echo is what I were looking for, would the standalone unit have value.  That is not accurate.  If someone is willing to spend $300 on a childrens toy for their 8-10 year old, then it's worth keeping them busy. The remaining included software is little more than proof if concept.  The browser nicely connect to the internet, thankfully.  But I am better off just using a pc. YouTube is good, but again a tablet works as well.  If privacy viewing porn is your thing, I have to give it credit for that. There are some cute free demos, like Elixer.  And what adult doesnt like fishing or poker.  There are even a few on the net like chess and flappybird. But again, proof of concept demos and games to babysit the children.  How many times do you want to ride a roller coaster or fly with the Blue Angels before your body recognizes gravity hasnt changed?  That is about it.

Sure, there is a store with a limited number of titles.  Are there games for everyone's interest?Well, I havn't found anything.  I happen to be interested in survival, "open world" games or simulation games like Cities Skylines.   My birthday was on April 15th.  It is May 9th and I have yet to find anything that is attractive enough to take me away from what is better done on a PC. Venues? Seriously? A 3D lobby to go watch 2D theature.  And the fantacy that this device is going to provide business level productivity software is ... sorry, I really dont want to be rude, but... deluded.

Funny thing, after some searching, I did find a nice collection of games offered by an unassociated vendor.  Those do seem to have a bit more promise.  Oh, wait..I have to figure out how to enable developer mode, install software on my phone, basically hacking the system to install them.

I have always impressed by how Windows PCs come with a suite of preinstalled software that is immediately of value.  But then, PCs are suited to productivity.  There are a few of basic games, not one. A text editor, email, calculator, browser, paint, basic video editing, even a basic 3D modelling.  Immediately, it has unique utility that will last.  No, Quest doesnt get credit for having a browser.  I already have one on a PC, and it also has a clock and demos 3D modelling

The controls are nothing more than sloppy. And that is not a form and function problem.  Half of it is simply effort and programming.  They do come with a joy stick. I do have fine motor control of my fingers. And yet a rather intuitive use on the virtual keyboard is completely over looked.  There are ten buttons available on the controllers not used for the system.  And more if one is used as a modifier.  How about tab and enter? How copy an paste buttons.

What really got me was when I thought it might be usefull to do some 3D sketch, like I would with paint.  Yet the a most obvious and basic utility is missing.  I can find basic 3D modelling on a PC  but a utility to draw lines in VR?

I wonder.  Is Oculus a supposed to be a stand alone display for the PC?   Is it supposed to be an internet interface, a sort of internet phone?  Is it a stand alone game console like Xbox? Is it trying to be a portable gaming device like the Nintendo Switch?  What is it trying to be?  It seems to be trying to do everything and ending up doing nothing well.

I've been desperate for my computer.  This was a gift.  I live on a computer at work and home. I appreciate the utility. It has some promise.  I may take it back.  I got a chance to try it with Subnautica.  You owe Steam quite  a bit because without their software, Quest does not work.  If I had only one thing to point out it is that.  Without Steam, this would have no value. I would have returned it immediately.

Look. I am tired now. I'm about done trying it out. I had this thout about doing some 3D sketching for visualizing an equation. Just basic back of an envelope sketch. That kinda solidified my sense of it.  Other than that, I wasn't really sure how this email would go.  So here it is. Do with it what you may.

Objectively,

Sean

This fail at a mechanucal level that screams a lack of attention to detail extends to mechanical implementation.  I click on a virtual button and there is no mechanicsl feedback that let's  my fingers know.

This is completely false. Every single button on every Oculus controller ever made has mechanical feedback. It is not Oculus who has a lack of attention to detail here.

That thing you feel on your keyboard when you press a key. That thing you feel on your mouse when you click any button. Or that thing you feel on an XBox gamepad when you click any button.

Simply put: It's the click you can physically feel when you click something; as it lets you know that you successfully clicked.

The OP is trying to say that the Oculus controllers don't have this, which of course, they have always had it.

Do anyone knows is it possible to open local html files in Quest1/2?

If it is, we could make at least a local calculator in JS 🙂

@kojack?

You are being dismissive. I explained, in detail, exactly what I have, why I have it, what I have attempted, and what the result is.

Do try to have some modicum for others.  I have spend the entire weekend trying to trouble shoot the link from a three page procedure provided by customer support.  So far, no, it has not functioned as expected and remains little more than a stand alone device.

I did say that there are some things that do work, as long as it is simple and within the bounds of the stand alone device  But I am an adult and expect to be talking to adults . Sorry if it puts you off but my topic is not "Things I like about the Quest" It is "Generally disappointed" and I continue to find reasons to be so.

And not, the Graphics are hardly WOW.  They are blurry and require

I am glad that you are having a wonderful experience but I am not talking about your experience, I am talking about my experience.

I own Subnautica and it initially worked. I am finding numerous problems though using it in VR.  I can get use to the controls which are always trouble but I find that the PDA is in my face.  I love the sense of scale  but that doesn't offset the other issues.

The Quest link has failed and doesn't recognize the 3.0 and 3.1 USB but reports it as a 2.0. Even then, it has been touchy, often dropping out.  Airlink has been glitchy. I'm running an MSI Raider G75 with plenty of memory and an RTX 2080 graphics card.

Yes, the link and airlink can play the SteamVR and Occulus PC software, they can but they aren't.

See the comment above from Kojak who says,  "A Quest with Link or Airlink can play all Oculus PC software and all SteamVR software (regardless of where it's bought)."

Well, you might return to my OP where I clearly said it was a gift..

Not the trigger and grasp though I am getting use to the trigger as it is a slider for speed control.

Still, my experience is accumulating major issues and the someone smaller ones that I might otherwise not have been concerned with are now an irritant.

Here, this is the email I received from customer support..

========

Thank you for contacting Oculus Support regarding your issue with Oculus PC software saying that the headset is connected to a USB 2.0. I am glad to assist you.

So that I can understand the issue properly, can you answer the following question:

Do you have other non-Oculus USB devices connected to the laptop? If so, can we disconnect all of them except for the Quest 2, and a mouse + keyboard?
Have you had a chance to review the Oculus Link setup page? You can click here to review that information.
Do you have any other compatible PC on which you can test the Link cable.
Are you using any adapter or extender with the Link Cable?

I also have some steps that we can try to resolve the issue:

Restart the PC
Reboot the Quest 2, you can click here for those steps.
Make sure the headset is up to date from here.
Can we try alternate USB ports for the Link cable, especially after removing any non-Oculus USB devices.

Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting:
right-click Start
click Power Options
click Additional Power Settings
click Change plan settings
click Change Advanced Power Settings
find USB Settings
make sure that Selective Suspend Setting is set to Disabled, not Enabled
Ensure that USB power saving settings in Windows Device Manager are not enabled for your USB ports:
right-click the Start button and open Device Manager
find your USB ports
right-click and select Properties
go to Power Management
make sure that options to save power are deselected (please note that it is normal that some of them will not have any checkbox for power saving settings).
Test once more with any another Link cable if you have one.

Try factory resetting device using steps over here.
Try manual un-install of Oculus Home. To do so:
Disconnect the computer from the internet
Backup any necessary content (See: How do I backup the content I download for my Oculus Rift?)
Reboot into Safe Mode
Uninstall Oculus Home using the Control Panel
Delete all Oculus folders from here: C:\Program Files
Remove any Oculus folders from here:
C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData
C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Local
C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\LocalLow
C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Roaming
Restart the computer in normal mode
Reconnect the computer to the internet
Install Oculus Home

Make sure that you are not using multiple displays. The only fully supported configuration is to have the headset and one monitor plugged in. If you are using 2 or more monitors or displays of any kind, please unplug the extras. Also if you have a multiple graphics card configuration like CrossFire or an SLI configuration, please physically uninstall one of your GPU cards as multiple graphics card configuration can cause issues with Quest 2.

If the above steps don't work please gather logs using these steps below, so that I can review your system:

Open the Run window (Windows key + R).
Enter and run: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusLogGatherer.exe
The above link is the default directory. Bear in mind that if you installed Oculus Home to another drive you will need to update the command with the correct file path.
Select the checkbox next to ‘Full logs’.
Select "1 day" from the "Collect last" drop down list.
Wait for the log collection to finish. This can take some time to complete.
The program will automatically generate a zip file containing your logs, which will be saved to your desktop automatically.
Attach the newly created zip file to your next support response.

Now, it it your contention that I did not receive that email?  Is it your opinion that it is not a particularly excessive level of troubleshooting for someone purchasing an off the shelf item.  I am not a computer tech. I am not a programmer.  I don't build PCs as a hobby.  I just wanted to enjoy a gift that my wife, who is so not tech savy, spent a month researching to find what she felt was the best option.

So, at this point, yes, I have been finding even little things irritating.
