My two cents.

Rift has better (clearer) optics,
Rift has better audio input.
Rift is more comfortable and easier to put on/take off.
Rift has the better (ergonomically) hand input devices (Touch).
Rift will be able to play everything (with dev support, of course).
Rift fails on room tracking. It excels in practically every other area.

BUT, because Oculus made a conscious decision to not release Touch on launch day (reasons aside), and because I'm a hobbyist developer, and because I NEED hands in VR RIGHT NOW, I bought a Vive.
And for those of you who are curious why this "HTC employee" is still hanging around here. I plan to buy a Rift the second Touch releases. Rift is still my first love and always will be.

By the way, the Tribal Instincs Vive review is the most comprehensive, honest review you will find on the internet right now. Even Tested is starting to blur their words, making it difficult to make an educated decision. This may have something to do with Will's new VR development company. He might feel an obligation to not piss off any of the HMD manufacturers. But that's a different topic.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

I watched his review on 25:20 about room scale makes me want to own a Vive so bad can't wait anymore. I am also in the camp where I don’t even want a rift anymore, it just seems like it is already outdated tec compared to the vive.

Here's a review from someone who basically mirrors what I've heard:

The more unbiased reviews I hear from folks with substantial time with both HMDs, the more confident I am in the Rift's visual quality.

The reviewer seems to have reached the same conclusions that I have - though he has the advantage of actually trying both headsets.

If you read through the hype, it seems that Oculus got the HMD and Touch controllers right. Where they're lacking is room-scale out of the box and delayed release of the Touch controllers.

I'm glad Vive has kept Lighthouse open source because the Rift HMD + Touch controllers + Lighthouse would be the perfect combination. CV2 - Oculus take note!

Really? Even though he strongly suggested the PSVR as the headset to get?

What is everyone talking about the Rift coming with 2 tracking cameras? It comes with one camera on a stand that you are supposed to put on your desk somewhere.

If you're interested in comparing apples to apples, you must compare the Rift + Touch to the Vive + Wands. The Touch Controllers will ship with a second camera, which means any owner of Rift with Touch will have two cameras. It doesn't make sense to talk about Rift room-scale with only one camera because no one will try to use it that way. Two cameras are only required to prevent occlusion of hand-sets by the body. It's VERY unlikely you're going to block the headset.

In the short-term, Rift is only shipping the HMD and one camera. Touch is delayed, and thus room-scale is delayed for Rift. If you aren't using room scale one camera is sufficient for the HMD because it has IR LEDs on the front and back of the headset and you won't have occlusion issues. Once people try to use Rift with Touch in a manner similar to the Vive, it will have two cameras.

Hope that clears it up.

The build quality and materials used for the Rift are very very good by all accounts.... yet the reviewer points out that it feels cheap with "velcro" adjustments "for $600." Everyone from Norm @Tested to anandtech have had glowing reviews of the build quality....

....that was where he left the Rift portion of the review, with negative comments about low res and velcro....

....next was Vive which was the best VR he's ever seen. "Bad-ass" ... basically said it was on par with Rift for build quality, hmm.

Then liked PSVR a lot with it's pretty compromised HW.

At the very least, he had very little to say about the Rift HW in a positive light....but mention velcro and "cheap" to describe the insane design and materials that have gone into the Rift.

Someone can prefer one to the other, but considering the incredible amount of r&d and "spare no expense" construction of the Rift, to conclude it feels cheap sounds like hes got an issue with Oculus going in.

The idea that the much more elegant Rift gets the "cheap" designation of the 3 HMDs is hard to believe. No one else has had anything close to that opinion.

Edit: By the way, the only two competitors in the review are Rift and Vive... PSVR is a different platform, of course.

As such his opinion of the PSVR as being very good is just good cover for his dismissive review of Rift.

If all I had to go on was that review and I'm a PC gamer, I'd come away with the "knowledge" that Rift is cheap and pixelated, and Vive is "Bad ass". Who would buy a Rift if that's what you knew of it?

Guess what...it's BS. Rift will be shown to be superior HW and have already shown how insanely detailed their design and quality are. I'm fortunate I'm in the know on that stuff and im all about the quality of the HMD,personally.

Ok it looks like touch does come with a second camera, but that camera is also suppose to sit on your desk. Do these cameras work as one for both the rift and touch? Or is one for the rift and one for the touch?

The rift has led's in back of the head set so its tracking was never a problem with one camera in a fixed position. As for The touch I don't know.

Why would you say the Rift has any room scale at any point in time anyway? There are no cameras in front of the HMD or software mapping out your space showing a grid so you don't run into things.

two cameras on your desk even if they work together(which I don't think they do) You could still easily get blind spots in your area.

The rift is only made for standing in front of your desk facing the camera and thats all it will ever be. Period

Not quite. With two cameras you should spread them out. Having two cameras is only necessary so that your body doesn't block line-of-sight from the Touch to at least one of the cameras (or from a Vive Wand to a Lighthouse box). With only one, you could block it (occlude) simply by facing away. The ideal setup is up high in opposite corners of the room - like HTC uses for Lighthouse. For best results Rift users will likely want to use the same configuration. Placing both on your desk close together would defeat the purpose of a second camera.

Like I said, the second camera is for occlusion. The only reason the Rift headset needs LED's in the back is for single-camera setups. Touch will always be used with two cameras.

The Vive Chaperone system currently needs the user to walk around the room to map out the play space; The system doesn't automatically do it with the front camera. There was talk that it might be able to do it, but at the moment the Rift is also able to use Chaperone, and to do Room Scale.

The advantage of the Vive is that its front camera allows you to double-tap a button and see a "Tron mode" image of your room. This means you won't have to pull it off your face to sit down or pick something up. With the Rift, you'll have to lift it off your face to do the same thing.

Also incorrect, but then you already knew that.
