Gpu dilemma

Anonymous
Not applicable
I spent a bit of time over the Xmas holidays upgrading my computer. With the exception of the Gpu (GTX 670 4gb) I'm all singing and dancing and ready for the Rift (due at the start of April).

My dilemma is that I don't want to shell out for a 980 just before Pascal is due out. I'd hoped that Pascal would launch about the same time as the Rift but this seems less likely. I'm also interested to see if the Gpu makers will have a VR specific card model in the new release. When the time comes I will either buy a Pascal card or look for a good deal on a second hand 980 as others upgrade.

What if any sort of an experience can I expect with a Gpu that doesn't meet the minimum spec if I stay as I am with the 670 ?

Will I end up with a Rift that I can't use, full stop, until I do upgrade, or will I get some functionality and usefulness, if restricted ?

One thing I would definitely like to do, from the off, is watch some 3D movies. Does that require a minimum spec Gpu or is the 670 fine for that sort of thing ?

No, a 670 won't be enough.

I'd recommend getting a 970 for now and then selling it right when Pascal comes (you'll get most of your money back).

Always look at the used market you can a 290x rather cheap these days.

I would get whatever you can get cheapest and upto spec then look at Polaris and Pascal, Polaris should be first and has the potential to be the strongest.

Your in the same boat as me, I have 2 GTX 780's running in SLI. So, what I've decided to do is go with this R9 390X.

It's almost as fast as the GTX 980 for a little less. I have my two GTX 780's for sale on Craigslist and have somebody coming to look at them tonight for $350. This will cover the cost of the 390X at least! 8-)

This way I can wait until both Polaris and Pascal launch.
