Its a new VR-Gear that HTC and Valve is making and the development kit should be out this spring.
They promise that the consumer product will be out before the end of this year.

Wireless hand-tracking hardware

VR base stations for 15 x 15 feet tracking for VR world movement

"A 1,200 by 1,080 pixel screen in front of each eye, with refresh rates of a blistering 90 frames per second."

"A gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor combine to precisely track the rotation of your head on both axes to an accuracy of 1/10th of a degree, allowing you to look around the virtual environment naturally. Couple the headset with a pair of Steam VR base stations to track your physical location (in spaces up to 15 feet by 15 feet) – get up and walk around inisde the virtual world! "

"The Vive headset was developed in conjunction with Valve, creators of such ground-breaking games as Portal and Half-Life. HTC manufactures some of the finest consumer electronics on the planet and Valve is an unrivaled architect of virtual worlds, so you know the collaboration is something special. Vive is powered by Valve’s SteamVR so plenty of games that take advantage of its capabilities will soon be available on the Steam service. "

How many development kits has valve/sony shipped so far? I think we are all being sucked in by the Valve/Sony PR machines to put doubt into our heads over oculus, and it seems to be working.

But we should not forget that Valve was already much more advanced than Oculus. Remember all the people romancing about testing Valve's VR solution more than 1 year ago? At that time Oculus hasn't even published DK2.

Currently I'm more sold on HTC/Valve's Vive than on Oculus. I'm pretty sure that Valve will be releasing some new games (HL3, L4D3) together with their Steam machines and HMDs. So, if Oculus CV1 comes holiday season or later I'll go with Vive. If CV1 comes much earlier then I'll try Oculus.

Please let's all get back to developing. Some of the comments here make little sense 😄

...This is what happens when you sell Dev Kits to consumers.

I think price is still an issue (there is no saying that this will be even close to the 300 dollar Oculus is trying to meet)
And we can expect quite allot of delays from Valve (valve time, google that)
And we know kinda for sure they will only make one updated version of them cuz a vive 3 will NEVER come!

And competition is good !

One thing is for sure, those massive 3B class laser emitters with danger stickers all over them look so expensive, I bet they could easily cost more than double the Oculus Rift HMD alone!

As a point of comparison, two STEM controllers with two base stations cost $400.
