....and retrieved the pieces (and put the headset together again) .... I can't for the Life of me work out where the USB plugs in? HILFE?

did your headset usb/hdmi cable get removed from the headset? if so there should be  a spot on the top left if the interior of the headset where you should be able to plug it back in. you'll have to remove the facial interface to get at it
