I've not really been keeping tabs on OR life for a while, was hoping to to play a round of HL2, optomised for the DK2, without having to faff around with extended mode. Didn't work. Extended mode is a PITA when you already have 5 monitors.
Anyhoo, I like FPS - what should I be trying to play ?
I enjoyed the Frontier Beta with the DK2, but upon release decided to wait for (the/a) commercial VR. Basically I'm getting old and tired.
So, I'm looking for drop in games for DK2 with zero config on my part... just like the future - any recommendations ?
Original Doom, Quake and other similar engine games have been ported to VR and they look and run very well... Quake even has decoupled aiming like Half Life but runs infinitely better.
It's actually very awesome to re-experience these classic games in VR. It creates the same kind of magic that you felt the first time you played these games in monitor 3D. VR makes 20 year old games fresh and playable again!
Alien Isolation for sure (just a small config tweak last time I tried, since the device isn't officially supported), Minecraft (not really your standard FPS, but it is first person). There isn't a game that support VR without any tweaking. That will happen once CV1 is established (with some menu options for controls, probably), that is, a year away. I'm personally looking forward to No Man Sky, and I don't really expect anything from Bethesda (Fallout 4, Doom), but one can dream. Crytek and Epic are bound to come up with some good stuff too.
Portal 2 I've heard is also pretty good, however, it will probably suffer the same problems as HL2, There are issues related to drivers currently though. so I'm not sure which games work or don't out of the box.
The good thing with VR is that you can have a very good experience with non-realistic games. So old games, with relatively low quality graphics, will work as far as immersion is concerned. It doesn't have to be ultra realistic, as long as it is consistent.
