Heads up - change in referrals upcoming

Quantowski
Protege

So for past couple days I had issues activating referrals (wanted to buy Pavlov Shack or Dead Second) but was unable to. I reached out to Support and I received following reply:

Referral links are actually a promotion. They provide a discount from the listed price of the game or app being shared. At this time you aren't able to take advantage of this referral, but if you continue checking back in the future, other referrals may become available to you

I know that I'm not the only one as several people on reddit have similar issue. It looks like Meta is changing mechanics of referrals again without any proper communication. If you have any game you want to buy thru referral - probably this is the time to do it.

This is yet another situation when Meta is doing a poor job communicating changes to community (similarly to scoped storage). I really hoped for Quest 3 to work as my stand-alone solution but at this point I'm more willing to expand my software portfolio thru PC VR as at least I know the rules I'm playing

I'm not sure the referrals has had a change or whether it's down to Meta enforcing the rules more stringently.

Every so often we get someone posting referral links onto the forum and I remove them because there's a chance that Meta may put a block on that persons referral abilities.

If anyone offers referral links via any form of mass communication like a forum, facebook group, reddit.. a review site etc. or there's a pattern of referrals that might suggest they're not just referring friends or family, Meta could block the referee's privileges. the rules have always stated that.

In fact we had a poster here very recently who'd been blocked, adamant that firstly the rules didn't prohibit mass communication then saying the rules were wrong... well not sure what their argument was in the end. But anyway, I don't want to see anyone on this forum get blocked so I remove the links and advise accordingly.

So my advice is not to buy through referrals now unless it's from a friend or family member as per the rules that way the referrer and the referee are unlikely to ever get blocked.

Well, that's the thing. I bought the device in February and I've read term and conditions then. I checked again and I have no email from meta informing me that terms and conditions are changing. How am I suppose to know that? Why it's such an issue for the support to inform me that something I've done does not comply with terms and conditions? How can I change what I do within Metas environment if I don't know what's actually the problem?

What's more terms for device referrals are still in the previous format so is it OK to post device referrals on forums but not apps?

Yeah, I still think what meta is doing is poor customer care where I'm penalized because they made a refferal Programme without thinking it through and than changed those rules without informing me in a proper way

Edit: I read again Metas post on referrals published 15 ago - there is nothing about using referrals from forums, only about the 3 time use limit. So yeah, you should not give any advice on how to use referrals, they should be clearly stated and communicated

Hi @Quantowski

The post from @MetaQuestSupport don't need to mention that, because it's stated in the TOS.....you said, you read them, so actually you should know about.

The TOS also they this:

This Programme may be modified, suspended and/or discontinued by Meta at any time, with or without notice. In such event, any existing Credit links shall remain active until their applicable expiry date. Please note that Meta frequently implements changes, experiments, extensions and limitations for a variety of purposes at various times (the "changes"). Every offer and the entire programme are subject to such changes and other Terms and Conditions which Meta may impose at any time. All of the foregoing shall be subject to Meta's unlimited discretion. Your participation in the programme is subject to all of the foregoing and any such changes that Meta may make. Meta may, at its sole discretion, restrict participation in any programme(s), offer(s) and/or transaction(s) should it determine that any actions by advocates are fraudulent, suspicious and/or in violation of these and/or other applicable terms.

Especially the last part is important.

And it's also not ok to post device referrals everywhere, it's intended to send to friends or family, just like the app referrals.

The limit of 3 referrals also is in the ToS, so your argument is invalid. And yes I read them but I believe that you have not, because in the device referral ToS there's nothing about family, only friends. So as per your logic you should not give device referrals to your family as they are not intended to participate as per ToS.

Actually I challenge you to point me to any part of device referral ToS that mentions family as you are so smart and know the ToS so well.

And I know they can do what they want as per ToS and I can say it's poor customer care as per facts.

Being a family member does not exclude being a friend...but I don't want to argue about that.🙂
Both, family or friends are not unknown persons like it is when referral links are spreaded everywhere and anyone can use them.
I think, that's the only important thing.

Obviously you don't want to argue because I'm in the right here:)

I see your point, you are a formalist, that's OK. If you read my comments you will see that I did not object to current ToS at any point. What I pointed out is poor communication and customer care. If you are OK with it that's fine by me, but I expect better.

The terms and condition haven't changed regarding referrals.

As I said, I've been advising forum members of the rules for some time, since the beginning of 2023 at least which I think is when I first notice someone post a referral onto the forum. Mass communications was against the rules back then and I've been repeatedly referring people to Meta's Ts & Cs ever since.

What you wrote is not true. You can find original app referral ToS from 2021 which is written in the same spirit as still current device referral. The next version I see is current one, which is totally different.

So I'm wondering why would any of you bother to reply? Not only are you gaslighting valid points I'm giving here, you are showing lack of knowledge regarding ToS and at the end you are basically stating something that is not true. Are you paid by Meta? If so you are doing as lousy job as them with communication towards customers.

For reference 2021 app referral ToS:

P.S. The fact that in UK you can still stumble upon ToS that are no longer valid on official Meta site is laughable

That's the headset referral program, we're talking about the app referral program the 2 are separate.
