Hello everyone. I just joined the ranks :)

Hello everyone.  I finally pulled the trigger.  I couldn't resist the idea of VR any longer. See I was a MAJOR tech geek in the 90s.  Back then,  VR was the holy grail of tech.  I remember going to an arcade back then that had VR.  It was like the omni pad with a nerf gun sporting 16 bit graphics.  Sure, its laughable now but back then, it was completely bad a@#!  It was enough to give you the immersion.

So, I just received my MSI gaming laptop that is VR ready (1060 GPU) and today my rift arrives from UPS   but the touch controllers are on back order.  So, no touch games for a few weeks I imagine.

With touch games being pushed back a few weeks for me, any suggestions on my first experience?  Im open to buying games but I plan on holding out for the Steam sale unless Oculus store has something steam doesn't.

I do have some questions if experienced users have a moment.

1. How are the integrated headphones?  I have a pair of over the ear headphones with open backs.  Crazy comfortable and crazy good stereo separation.  Debating what cans to use.

2.  Is it possible to play non VR games with the rift? I have a ton of FPSs that I would love to take for a spin.  Games like the Crysis series for example.

3. Any tips or tricks for setup?  Specifically getting the rift to sit comfortably.  I tried one of those $15 vr cardboard setups and that thing crushed my nose.  I assume due to the weight of the phone.

Thanks,
Mavruss

Do you like flying games or drive simulation?

1 Earphones are great but the one that oculus is selling now are much better for the inmersion.

2.Its posible with VorpX but dont recomend it, also you can use BigScreen beta.

3. Setup is easy, just plug the cables (HMDI,USB 3.0) start the pc and run the setup: https://www3.oculus.com/en-us/setup/ are your ports compatible with the rift? very important.

Good luck and welcome to Oculus VR comunity, feel free to ask.

Welcome aboard @mavruss and congratulations on your purchase.  You won't regret it for a minute.

As for what games to play, i would just give the free games/demos for a start and then check out the reviews on the Games & Apps part of this forum.  You will see that different users will have differing preferences for game type, so you will probably be better to check out the games that are of the type that you go for.

As for comfort, the Rift is fully adjustable, but one thing you might want to be wary of is to not set it too tightly.  I think most peeps do that initially and end up with headset-shaped lines on their faces.

When you have had a chance to try it out, come back and let us know how it went.

Bigscreen Beta is a good way to play standard 2D games on the Rift. You can play solo, or join a room with other people for a bit of social interaction. It is one of my favorite experiences even now that I have Touch.

If you're feeling up for more social interaction, check out Altspace.

Thanks everyone! I Like space combat sims, mech sims and FPS (I did mention I was big into this stuff during the 90s right? Mechwarrior, wing commander and Doom  ruled).

Ill check out Bigscreen Beta today as well.  I read about people putting these things on too tight.  Isnt there a saying for the VR headset imprint on peoples faces lol?

I am pumped for Star Citizen and the VR versions of Doom and Fallout 4 as well!

Definitely take some time to adjust all the straps properly (totally worth a few minutes). For the first day or two I had mine, I was putting it on too tight.

VorpX works well for running some 2D games in VR, and not so well for others. However, it's unlikely to run them at the full 90fps, which can cause some motion sickness if you're not careful.

I thought Oculas just released an update to allow for 45 FPS that doesnt cause motion sickness.  That was the primary reason I went with a 1060 and not a 1080 GPU.  Was I mistaken?

Also, yeah, elite dangerous.  Im thinking about grabbing that if its on sale for the Steam winter sale.  That and the Solus project
