Hello everyone. I just joined the ranks :)

Hello everyone.  I finally pulled the trigger.  I couldn't resist the idea of VR any longer. See I was a MAJOR tech geek in the 90s.  Back then,  VR was the holy grail of tech.  I remember going to an arcade back then that had VR.  It was like the omni pad with a nerf gun sporting 16 bit graphics.  Sure, its laughable now but back then, it was completely bad a@#!  It was enough to give you the immersion.

So, I just received my MSI gaming laptop that is VR ready (1060 GPU) and today my rift arrives from UPS   but the touch controllers are on back order.  So, no touch games for a few weeks I imagine.

With touch games being pushed back a few weeks for me, any suggestions on my first experience?  Im open to buying games but I plan on holding out for the Steam sale unless Oculus store has something steam doesn't.

I do have some questions if experienced users have a moment.

1. How are the integrated headphones?  I have a pair of over the ear headphones with open backs.  Crazy comfortable and crazy good stereo separation.  Debating what cans to use.

2.  Is it possible to play non VR games with the rift? I have a ton of FPSs that I would love to take for a spin.  Games like the Crysis series for example.

3. Any tips or tricks for setup?  Specifically getting the rift to sit comfortably.  I tried one of those $15 vr cardboard setups and that thing crushed my nose.  I assume due to the weight of the phone.

Thanks,
Mavruss

VorpX works well for running some 2D games in VR, and not so well for others. However, it's unlikely to run them at the full 90fps, which can cause some motion sickness if you're not careful.

I thought Oculas just released an update to allow for 45 FPS that doesnt cause motion sickness.  That was the primary reason I went with a 1060 and not a 1080 GPU.  Was I mistaken?

Also, yeah, elite dangerous.  Im thinking about grabbing that if its on sale for the Steam winter sale.  That and the Solus project

What  you refering is ASW is used for low end PC or if you want to improve image quality with the cost of FPS, works automatic when you go under 90 FPS, sometimes is a pain in da bud.

I'm pretty sure VorpX has its own version of ATW. It works fine for forward motion, but I find turning my head can feel quite stuttery in Skyrim, for example.

That's why I use the mouse to turn instead.

@Mavruss welcome to the fold, or shall I say Rift?

1. How are the integrated headphones?
They are great, I am a bit of an audiophile and own the Beyer Dynamic DT700 and the Grado Labs GS100e so I get annoyed at poor quality headphones. The ones with the rift are great (not amazing) but considering their size and the fact that they are attached to the headset they do the job surprisingly well!

2.  Is it possible to play non VR games with the rift? You can play them in 2D using something like Virtual desktop, or use VorpX (this doesn't always work very well and many games are incompatible with it)

I would personally stick to games designed for VR, normal games dont translate that very well if they haven't been built for VR from the ground up.

3. Any tips or tricks for setup?  I have a large head and a roman nose and the rift is comfy and snug. Some people get a bit hot under there, but I haven't ran into the problems. Just follow the onscreen instructions during the set up and it will feel intuitive when its on your head and you adjust the straps etc.

Everyone has answered the first two points to death so I'll focus on your third question.

This is a copy paste from a thread a while back:

There are a few things you can do to ensure a comfortable fit.

1.  The side Velcro should snug the unit to your face without putting pressure on it.  If you feel like it's pulling the Rift against your face, it's probably too tight.  When fitting a Rift, I hold it lightly up to my face and do up the side Velcro without pulling the straps.  You're trying to keep the Rift secure, not pressure-weld it to your face.

2.  The v at the back of the head strap should go below the protrusion of bone in the back of your skull - called the Occiptical Proturberence.  When I first got my Rift I didn't relax the top strap enough to let this happen.  Completely undo the top strap and make sure you pull the plastic surround strap down so it sits just below the notch in your occipital bone.  If you do this correctly it will help a LOT with the feeling that the Rift is front heavy or slipping forward.

3.  Tilt the headset.  Not everyone realizes that you can tilt the main housing on hinges.  Use tilt to balance the pressure between your forehead and cheeks.  This is also a good way to ensure you have a large sweet spot in the lenses.

If you do all of this correctly the Rift should actually feel a little bit loose.  That's fine.  I often end a play session of several hours with only the faintest hint of 'Oculus Face'.  If you find you have a clearly defined red ring on your face after playing then it's not adjusted well.  This is a VR headset, not a Facehugger.

Welcome to the Rift!

As for space sims, Elite Dangerous and Eve Valkyrie will definitely be worth taking a look at and if you like more "down to earth" cockpit games, DCS World, which is free for the basic version, is well worth a look also.

Thanks for the suggestions on software.  Nice guide on setup.  That was exactly what I was looking for.

Elite dangerous is looking pretty sweet tbh.

Hello and welcome to the Rift. I don't usually post much in the forums but since i stumbled upon your post i thought i'd recommend some of my favourite games so far.  Everything free is a must. Try all of them out. Even if some apps are not very good, many are quite interesting or plain cool. Several VR short films on the Oculus store are really nice to showcase the capabilities of the tech. Specially Invasion, Lost, Henry, Allumette, The Rose and I and the Oculus Introduction Video. Then we get to games.

As far as Oculus exclusives go, Lucky's Tale is really good and i think it's still free.  But my favourite so far (before Touch since mine hasn't arrived yet) is Damaged Core.  Really good, fast-paced, action fps that plays with your controller and head/body movement. I think Dragon Front is also exclusive, this one is a free to play (i think) card battle game.

Then i like Windlands a lot (can't wait to play it with Touch), Eagle Flight and Eve: Valkyrie.  Hope you find something to enjoy. Lots on content in both Oculus store and steam.

Well, I got my rift setup last night.  Not a good first impression.  I was getting the screen door effect really bad and the text in Oculus home was blurry as hell.  I slid the eye pieces around for a while trying to find the setting that made as close as possible to clear.  I ended up at 64 for spacing.

I did some digging and found the hack using the SDK to improve resolution.  That helped quite a bit.  Oculus should make this an easy option to access in their setting window on their software.  I cant see why not.

Im downloading Eve now and have Adr1ft loaded waiting to go.  I havent had that experience yet that justifies this investment.  Im hoping to get that sometime this week as my Touch controllers arrive Thursday.  Funny how that worked out.  Apparently the Steam winter sale starts the same day.  This is going to hurt my wallet :open_mouth:
