Hello everyone. I just joined the ranks :)

Hello everyone.  I finally pulled the trigger.  I couldn't resist the idea of VR any longer. See I was a MAJOR tech geek in the 90s.  Back then,  VR was the holy grail of tech.  I remember going to an arcade back then that had VR.  It was like the omni pad with a nerf gun sporting 16 bit graphics.  Sure, its laughable now but back then, it was completely bad a@#!  It was enough to give you the immersion.

So, I just received my MSI gaming laptop that is VR ready (1060 GPU) and today my rift arrives from UPS   but the touch controllers are on back order.  So, no touch games for a few weeks I imagine.

With touch games being pushed back a few weeks for me, any suggestions on my first experience?  Im open to buying games but I plan on holding out for the Steam sale unless Oculus store has something steam doesn't.

I do have some questions if experienced users have a moment.

1. How are the integrated headphones?  I have a pair of over the ear headphones with open backs.  Crazy comfortable and crazy good stereo separation.  Debating what cans to use.

2.  Is it possible to play non VR games with the rift? I have a ton of FPSs that I would love to take for a spin.  Games like the Crysis series for example.

3. Any tips or tricks for setup?  Specifically getting the rift to sit comfortably.  I tried one of those $15 vr cardboard setups and that thing crushed my nose.  I assume due to the weight of the phone.

Thanks,
Mavruss

may i ask what monitor you have been using up until now?

You don't really have to answer, but the chances of a not-so-good first impression appear to increase with the quality of the monitor that the user has previously been using.

However, once you experience the added immersion that VR brings to games like Elite Dangerous, you might be more likely to accept the perhaps obvious compromises in quality that this first generation of headsets is capable of.

For me, although i have 3 of them, my monitors are very basic/old 1280/1024 Dell's so the Rift compared reasonably favourably with those.

Please give some games a try and then come back and let us know whether your initial views have changed any.

At this stage in the game, we have to live with this resolution as the tech isn't quite there yet.

On regular displays, I am quite picky about PPI (running a 4K panel at the moment), but I've been able to enjoy the Rift no issue. Especially when paired with Touch, the immersion overcomes the "sub-par" pixel density.

You have to realize as well that the more pixel dense HMDs get, the more GPU horsepower needed to drive them at 90+ Hz.

UPDATE:  That was fun.  this morning I discovered a glitch with either the laptop or the rift.  I was getting the HDMI cable isnt connected error.  I reinstalled the oculus software then my graphics drivers.  Rebooted multiple times with no luck.  I ended up puling power on the laptop and rebooted.  For whatever reason, that worked.

I understand the resolution limitations.  I just didn't think the SDE would be that pronounced.  Im getting past it now.  I have the left eye pretty clear but my right eye is a bit blurry.  I blame age for that, not Oculus!

Now, Im on the hunt on how to safely clean the lenses.  The cloth they included is smearing the lenses more than anything.

Microfiber ok to use or will it cause micro scratches?

1) headphones are great
2) dont bother imo
3) setup is easy the more epace the better

Wellcome to vr i gotta rush so cant say more

PS consider elite dangerous, assetto corsa, pCARS and possibly ets2/ats as some none touch seated games
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Make sure the HDMI cable is fully connected to the Rift. It pulls out like any other cable but has a custom molded connector so it looks more permanent than it is. Mine was coming and going until finding the problem.  -EL
