How does three sensor Rift compare with Vive - bang for bucks

andysonofbob

I live in the UK with a normal UK salary so I can just about achieve the roomscale minimal (1.5 x 2 is it?) with the meagre room sizes.  I will never be able to achieve the roomscale I see some people enjoying in warehouses using the Vive.  The rift comes in at £657 for three sensor setup where the vive ships at £759.  (I have ignored the headphones etc. because some people might not need them.)

What are the Vive folk getting for their extra £100?  For someone in my situation, is there any scenario where the Vive would outshine the Rift, with my limited setup.

Follow on question:  Theoretically, if I removed or moved the dining table that shares the
room with my rift, I might be able to expand my playzone by a bit.  With
that being the case, what is the maximum roomscale size that
the rift can achieve with three sensors whilst still remaining optimum?  In other words, I know that the Vive can achieve a much larger playspace than the Rift, at what point will the Rift's tracking degrade to the point where the Vive has the better tracking?

Thanks!

Hi mate, my play space is small, smaller than recommended above. I have the 2 sensors and find these more than enough for a small space. What sort of games are you most interested in? Mine is Flight sims and racing games. So mostly seated, but saying that I still play standing games but have to watch the missus and kids when swinging 🙂
A PC with lots of gadgets inside and a thing to see in 3D that you put on your head.

There's bugger all difference to speak of between a Vive and a Rift with 3 sensors in terms of tracking. There's a bigger playable area with the Vive but tbh unless you live in a mansion you won't get any benefit at all with it.

For £100 less you'll be getting an HMD with a sharper and clearer display, less SDE, great quality built-in headphones, a headset that's more comfortable to wear, the benefits of ASW (Asynchronous SpaceWarp) which allows you to run your Rift on a less powerful computer or if you have a powerful computer you'll be able to supersample more), it's more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, has better designed motion controllers, motion controllers with analog sticks instead of trackpads and motion controllers with finger tracking.

For £100 more you'll be getting a headset that has a slightly bigger FOV and a headset that's better suited for glasses wearers.

If you want a Rift-like experience out of a Vive you'll need to spend an extra £99 on the Deluxe Strap to make it as comfortable to wear as the Rift and give you those headphones and wait a bit and spend another £99 at least (although I'm expecting people to pay twice that) when the Knuckles controllers are released. But even with those two purchases you'll still end up with a headset with inferior displays.

Anyone buying a Vive over a Rift has either more money than sense, lives in a mansion or has a SERIOUS problem with Facebook and/or Palmer Luckey.

I borrowed a friends Vive for 3 months before my Rift arrived last year, so have a good comparison between the 2.

I'm a UKer as well and have done the move the dining room table thing and the Rift with 3 sensors works absolutely fine. A lot of Vive users quote that the Vive has better tracking, but i'm 90% sure that's just because they've never used a Rift .... the tracking is the same, you really wont notice the difference.

As for Rift v Vive, both are great, but the Rift is just that 5% better in almost every way, so really not worth paying extra for that little bit less.

Plus you get access to a lot more games in the bargain as well !

bang for buck.... the rift is a no brainer... it just is.... Even if we were to accept the vive is better over all (for me its subjective and depends what is more important to you)... but even if we accept that, given the price difference, and the package which comes with it, the rift is better bang per buck - that said, i think the £100 of oculus store credit ended at the weekend so timing sucks there imo.

when working correctly** i put the 3 sensor tracking on a par with vive in normal room sized conditions

**this however is where vive scores points... IME getting all 3 sensors and the hmd running happily can cause a lot of swearing and un needed hassle.
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Thanks for the responses.  I already have a Rift + Touch but have just ordered a third sensor which makes the rift a bit closer to par with Vive both price and features.

You always like to hear you made a decent decision.

Unfortunately when it comes to cost is not that easy with Rift. Worst case scenario if you want room scale with rift in addition to headset and 3rd sensor you must figure out whether you going to need: USB extension cables to at least 2 sensors (3rd comes with its own), inatek USB card, extensions for HMD cables themselves. That alone is well over $100 (I "speak" from experience) then add the mess with USB cable management and Rift becomes less and less appealing. I purchased my rift solely because visually Touch controllers were much more appealing than Vive's donut wands.

Do you have your two sensors back-to-back or both facing forward. I have a small room for VR and I only tried forward facing. I was disappointed in the results with two forward facing sensors. Too many times I found myself facing opposite the cameras and losing signal and I despise teleport. I have not used my Rift in almost 4 months now but I think I will try it again after summer. The weather is too nice now and I have vacation soon so now is not the time for VR.
