How to appreciate Oculus (Home) in 1 easy step

As some of you may remember I had a friend's Vive to play with a while ago, and quite enjoyed it and the tracked controllers.

Early this week he asked me to come over and give him a hand as he was having some issues with the Vive.

Basically after working fine for quite a few weeks he now suddely has issues with the calibration.

We ran the room calibration many many times but he ended up under the floor every time.

Uninstalled and reinstalled SteamVR completely, changed USB slots, even tried a different computer.

Many searches later the only suggested solution we found that we hadn't tried yet was "reinstall windows"

Now for all the crap Oculus is getting about Home, DRM and keeping tight control over their software, I have to say I was very happy to come back home to my Rift and just be able to sit down and play games that run well, in an environment that (for met at least) has been extremely stable.

By the way, if anyone has a suggestion as to how to solve the SteamVR room calibration issue please let me know.

As far as I can tell, however many times we run through the room setup, it never seems to finish

(steamVR keeps asking to complete room setup, error 201 I believe)

I have no experience of Vive, and limited experience of Home. It is nice when things just work... I wish it would keep my sorting preference in the same way the desktop application does, though.

As for your friend's issue, it sounds like you need to chase the devs on Steam Support. In the meantime, there's a page showing the error codes and their meanings which might be of some use to you:

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamVR/Error_Codes

Good luck, mate. B)

I do agree that Oculus Home and the fact it just works is awesome, compared with the previous faffing required for old runtimes / extended mode etc.

But, one thing I dislike, especially with the CV1.. is the fact that I still have to faff to 'turn it off'

Due to Home always running / spamming error logs and the fact that the CV1 has no power button and likes to turn on when the area it sit's in is 'dark', its always popping up home and flickering my screen... So, I am having to stop and start OVR Service.

Edit: It also stays 'warm' on top, unless I stop OVR Service.

I wish they would let us 'open it' as required and when closing Home, actually close it properly, rather than just hide it.  You know.. like every (or almost every) other piece of software EVER!   My PC is not for the exclusive use of the Rift.

CV1: Ordered 6th Jan 2016 - Est Delivery Some time in May... DK2: Ordered: 8th of Aug 2014 - Delivered: 14 Oct 2014

I find Oculus Home very easy to use. I have the Vive too and lots of time when switching titles in VR on Steam, Steam will hang and it can be a mess. This early in the game Oculus Home is a joy to use. It's just sad that Oculus chose to wall of their store and only let those of us with Rifts use it. For that reason I will not purchase any Oculus only content. I would really like to check out Chronos, but I'm not buying a game I may not be able to play at a later date. Oculus home works so well that it's a shame they will not let everyone use it.

I do redeem all the codes I can from my Steam purchases and add them on Oculus Home since it just runs so clean. When you add in Virtual Desktop to your Oculus Home you never have to leave VR.

You could try lighting the sensor by turning the inside of your CV1 towards your screen.

So if I'm understanding this correctly... the one easy step way to appreciate Oculus Home is to try using a Vive? In which case, I concur.
