How to clean the DK 2

Hey
I have just gotten my DK 2 and starting to realize how often one need to clean the lenses. I have read that alot of people have ended up scratching their lenses during cleaning. So I'm wondering what is the recomended way of cleaning the lenses? Using microfibercloth's designed for monitors, cleaning kits geared towards camera lenses or something else? Also since I'm gonna be cleaning the lenses alot it would have to be one of the cheaper solution - I can't afford microfibercloth kits costing 30 USD everytime I use my DK 2, but then again I don't want to use anything that can damage the lenses.
Any help in choosing a safe cleaning methode would be much appreciated.

Personally I have been using the supplied cloth, with VERY light motion and pressure, but breathing on the lenses first for a little bit of lubrication. I've not noticed any gashes or scratches, though sometimes it can LOOK as if there's one due to the way light distorts through the lens. There's been a few times where I have panicked, then moved the rift slightly and realised it was just a refraction.

For me the bigger issue is how to clean that foam. After a few months its going to stink.... and its glued on 😞

I use the included cloth and wipe as gently as possible to remove any oily buildup. I also make sure my cleaning cloth is in a plastic bag when not in use so that dust or other particles that could harm the lenses doesn't build up on it.

The key is to be gentle and rub slowly and as long as it takes. Pressing and wiping hard is not how to do it, yet that feel natural. Don't do it :-).

Has anyone tried this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-in-1-Altura-Photo-Lens-Cleaning-Kit-for-All-Digital-SLR-Cameras-/281435646...

My collegue from work has gave me one of his kits (the same as in the link above), I don't know if this spray could damage or help? I also have the little brush and it seems soft enough, but I'm afraid of my 1st cleaning as I do want to make a good cleaning but without any scratches... :?

Maybe a word of advice from Cyber?

After only 1 day of usage, my hair and forehead have made a little "oily" spot on the left lense and its really hard to see through it. It makes my eye sore and the experience is just not the same as from the 1st usage.

Please respond if anyone has tried to use these kind of products... 🙂

A manual air blower (same you use to clean a camera) to remove dust from the lenses and then use the included cloth to remove any smudge. If you wipe before you remove the dust you're most likely gonna scratch your lenses. Dust can be very dangerous if you're a fragile little lens 🙂

Yes, I even use a hair dryer set to cold. That blows out also any particles that got into the Rift. Then I use the included cloth lightly sprayed with a camera cleaning spray and wipe gently and let the cloth dry before wipeing again.

I put circular screen protector on the lenses. I use whatever t-shirt I am wearing to clean them 🙂 no scratches.

The included micro-fiber cloth should suffice for most people.

However, if the lenses get really greasy or dirty, you can try lens cleaning towelettes.

I use these for my prescription glasses and I tried on DK2 lenses and they seem fine:

Hi Cyber,

Do you know if these are the same thing?

These ones are eligible for Amazon Prime... but I would hate to buy the wrong product just to save on shipping.

Thanks!
