How to get my games in VR or close and are there 16 foot USB-C wall outlet chargers?

Running into a few issues here. First, I'm using AirLink because everything I read on line regarding USB cables is bad news if you don't have USB-C. My ports are USB 3.0 which I think only puts out about less then 5 watts from what I understand.

The USB charging it not an option for me, I'm using the included charger to charge the Quest 3, but the battery time is horrible. The meta usb c to c charger is not an option for me, and reviews on 3rd party are mixed. Is there a charger I can buy that's 16 feet long that I can plug into a wall outlet so I can at least charge this while I pay and just use Airlink?

Also, I was looking at Meta's Vertual-Desktop app but can't get a clear description on what the does. How do I get my Steam games to go full screen and at least simulate a VR experience? The virtual desktop looks like it would do the same thing as the steamVR desktop feature, which basically just makes  virtual screen of model TV on your screen. What's the point of that?

It's just some of the negative reviews scared me off.

Look for the USB-A 3.0 or above cables that include power delivery made for the quest. It's the USB-A to USB-C cables that have an adapter near one side of the cable.

You can insert the charger into an adapter port on the cable and it will charge your headset at the same time. They come in 5M lengths.

This might help with using SteamVR with Quest

I can load all the software and even the games in the VR world, I even get the steam lobby. The problem(s) are. First. when I load Hellblade, it loads fine in VR through the headset, but then it gets suck at the main loading credit screen. I also tried to load the Everspace game, that came up with me in space, but I got stuck at the start menu, and the menu is way off centered to the screen - I can't get any of the buttons to work in the game menu to start the game.

A reviewer says the Quest charger of 10w doesn't provide enough power to charge and use the device at the same time. Their solution was to use a 20w charger which gave them a reliable connection.

I have the Syntech cable. I'm able to use it for data and enabling developer mode. I've not tested it's entire feature set as I was having issues with pairing it with Oculus Link mode so can't recommend this yet until I've figured it out.

Reviewers quote - February 28, 2024 Universe Games

"Step 1. Connect original power cable to this cable and plug it in. {Green light goes on}
Step 2. Connect to the headset {headset is charging}
Step 3. Connect to PC (HEADSET STOPS CHARGING)

If I skip step 1, the headset will stay charging connected to the PC but it is not getting the higher voltage from the original power supply so it's not any better faster than any other link cable.

Other people are reporting success so I must have received a faulty cable, except that it does charge {slow) and does transmit data in Quest Link. Anytime I connect the original power supply it actually STOPS charging. I have two original supplies and both work perfectly so I know it's not my supply but this cable.

#EDIT# If I plug the USB C power cord into a 20W charger *then* it works. The description here says the original quest adapter (which is ONLY 10W - and causes the whole cable not to work with power delivery...)

I am leaving this as a 1 star review until they update their product page to correctly inform users what they will need to do to get full power over the cable."

I think the entire thing is ridiculous. That fact that meta couldn't just add a small port to allow a wall charger: That move would have solved 90% of these charging issues. And it would have been nice if the battery in the headset was easy to remove. I see that storm coming down the road. And to think I'm a shareholder in Meta. When they make decisions like this, I get second thoughts about my investments.

I think what I'm going to do is return it, take the money and put it towards building a new modern system. I feel like I just paid $700 to be a beta tester. Maybe the Quest 4 will be out by then and I'll have the needed ports to have another go. Hopefully by then the company will make decisions that are more versatile everyone.

That limitation is with the 3rd party adapter because USB-A has limits of 5V. Whereas USB-C can be connected to ports that have power delivery between 5-20V with higher watt output.

It works better with Oculus Link. If you're able to figure out the teething problems with the aftermarket cable, you might have a better experience overall while streaming VR.

There are a few other things you could try...

If you have a computer without USB-C you may be able to install an USB-C PCI-Express Add-in card that supports power delivery and use it with the official cable from Meta. It doesn't need to have support for display port over USB-C.

Alternatively you can try using an Ethernet to USB-C adapter which also has a charging port for additional power delivery similar to the one you looked at earlier. This has been covered here...

Being that the Quest 3 is Meta's newest unit, I'm really surprised that all the base content looks like cartoon games for 5 year old kids from back in the 80s. We are in 2024.

This is what I want to see when I look though a VR headset.

I've worked in 3dsMax, build levels in Unreal since editor 2.0 in 1999 till now on Engine 5. The texturing, materials and lighting technology's today are amazing. I have to ask why Meta is not trying to advertise their unit's capability's by showcasing more realistic worlds. I'm guessing it's because there's almost no memory/ram in these things to handle detail textures and materials. That's fine and ok if you want to use the Quest as a pass through to a computer, but then there better be more connectivity options then just USB C.

I think I'm better off using the money to build a new computer and then I'll come back and try this again.
