Did you mean:

I have received an opened and resealed Rift box. How about you?

Has anyone else received an opened box for their first Rift?

I've ordered a new product and got what appears to be a used one instead. I did not fully open the box once the plastic bag was obviously tampered with and took pictures of it.

I find sending opened boxes as new terribly insulting (you may not, that has no bearing on me though).

Not willing to suffer through moths of support not answering based on the threads I see in here and I'm very close to request a refund/chargeback in case of no reply. Of course, already having DK2 and Vive may make me much less willing to accept compromise.

A week later edit: Some have thought this is a troll post and asked for pictures. I've attached them. I was so upset about the whole thing that I didn't come to the forums for all this time. In any case I decided to keep the unit and opened it. See the details later in the thread if you are curious. Here are the pictures:

Wait with the panic until everything is certain. Maybe it is a HUGE fail on Oculus side, but maybe it isn't.

I once bought a graphics card which not only was opened. It had a lot of dust on the cooler. Engage rage/panic mode when you are certain as I was when I saw the dust.
You know what is the best method to check if it was used? Just check the lenses. If anyone used the HMD there are surely some micro scratches already. If you check and see them on your Rift, make hell on the internets, really.
But since other people above provide reasonable scenarios, hold your horses for now 😉
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

I'm also doubting 75% of the claims that support hasn't gotten back to users in over a month.  That's also easy to fabricate.

Canada here, although my Rift looked brand new when I opened the box, the bag that it came in was opened before as the security tape was damaged...not a big deal as the rest of the unit was perfect. Also to note, if Customs opens any package, they clearly label the outside with yellow tape stating such.

I wouldn't be bothered if i was sent a rift that had been opened as long as it worked.  It cannot exactly be old now.  It would still be practically new anyway and if there were any defects you would just send it back.  I paid by paypal as most and you would be seller protected to the full amount.  If anyone is unhappy with an opened rift send it to me and ill send you my new shiny one when it comes 😄

Good news folks.

It took me almost a week to decide what to do and/or get over the fact that the box was opened and resealed and all this time the Rift remained unpacked. As I said, different folks have different tolerances for this type of things and I'm probably on the lower side.

Today I finally caved in and opened it and installed it. This is how it went if you are curious to read my first impression after about one hour of playing with it:

The devices themselves had some plastic seals as well and they didn't look resealed so that made me a bit more comfortable with the whole situation. Now all I could think of was "if only it will work well"...

So I installed it and started it and... well... all seemed fine. Until I realized that left eye was blurry as hell. When I would look towards the edges of the screen the image would be clear but in the middle it was a bit blurry and black lines would look gray. Panic sets in. "Damn it, I got one of the bad ones" I thought. Then I tried to wipe the lenses with the clean cloth I got with the DK2 and surprise surprise, the image is now clearer. Heart back in my chest. The left eye still seems a bit less clear then the right eye but not by much.

Then the god rays became apparent. Holly hell they are bad in my unit. I also have the Vive and they are no were near as bad. I don't know if my Rift is an outlier or not, or if I'm too sensitive to the god rays, but they are really bad and distracting. In my Vive I almost do not notice them.

Red tint: I have some faint red tint over the whole screen with a really pronounced red tint in the lower part of the screen. However, as luck would have it they are completely symmetric and mirrored in the two eyes. The lower part that it is the most visible is slightly tilted upwards toward my nose in opposite directions in the two eyes so it looks like you are looking through a diving mask - or like the middle of the W letter. It is clearly visible in the dark scenes but since it is symmetric it did not seem to produce eye strain. I will see if the red tint will produce eye strain in longer sessions. The red tint is not visible or apparent in well lit scenes. I hope it doesn't show up in Elite Dangerous as that my main app for the Rift (haven't tried it yet).

Comfort: out of the three devices, Rift, Vive and DK2 the Rift is by far the most... uncomfortable. By far. As in actually hurting. However, I've tried a Rift at a Best Buy store and I remember distinctly not feeling the Rift at all on my head. So I guess I need to find the guides about the adjustments as it seems I couldn't figure it out on my own.

IPD adjustment: I can't tell the difference between one extreme and the other of the setting, my eyes feel slightly uncomfortable on all positions of the glider. More guides to look up it seems.

Sound: totally great, I'm not an audiophile so I can't judge it properly but for me it sounds super. And the fact that I don't need to fiddle with another thing on my head is just great.

Image quality: there is just no contest here, to my eyes the Rift looks almost like twice the resolution of the Vive. I know that they are the same spec but that is not what I see. What a huge difference. Since image quality was the highest on my list of preferences this makes me really happy. Vive isn't bad either, is just not as good as the Rift to my eyes.

So I guess in the end the conclusion is that I'm relatively content with the unit I got. Would I keep it if ordered from a retail store? Probably not due to the relatively pronounced red tint and slightly less clear left eye. Will I go through the bother of going through Oculus support? If the Rift continues to work as it did now and I don't discover who know what else (dead pixels or who knows) then no I will not try to replace it. But I wouldn't consider this a flawless unit.

Other thoughts: Some folks kept replying here on the forums to various unhappy people that maybe preordering is not for them. Those replies upset me greatly and I thought of them to be not constructive and inflammatory. Well, now, at the end of my preorder experience, I'm starting to see their point. This has been my first preorder ever since I know I have a low tolerance for issues but I was super excited about the Rift so I didn't even think twice. But I'm left with a bit of a bitter taste so I will think twice before preordering anything, touch included. I'll probably just wait for them to get into the retail stores.
