I tried using the DK2 with a Leap Motion and was like "OMG"

I couldn't resist to wipe off the dust off of my Leap Motion after I wasn't able to find a suitable ... "place" in my everyday usage scenarios at my PC and let it rot for months in a drawer.

Putting that thing on the Rift... srsly, do it. There are some demos on their dev center available, and it blew me away. The fact that I could see "though" the Rift and interact with my environment... and see everything in IR of course, was a cool experience.

I really went so far to say "the consumer Rift should have those cameras" (or some kind of camera) in it, so I can enable a "pass-through" mode in any Rift game to find my controller or type something on the keyboard.

I mean, two little phone cameras can't be that costly, right?

In case you haven't seen, there are some videos showcasing this (one is my own):

Update: I made another one :-]

IS that the desk-mounted one, or the front of rift mounted one? If the latter, have they addressed the "obscuring the rift IR LED" issue, if it was ever a probem?

Rift-mouned, but I didn't use their original clip (you can see it in the first video).

They say, the clip ITSELF doesn't obscure the LEDs, but the Leap does. My placement should be better, as it's more to the top whe no LEDs are in the middle are and further to the side.

The demos don't use headtracking, so my effort to figure that out was kind of pointless... but maybe important for future software.

*edit: of course my placement sucks of you need to access the "cable box" of the Rift...

The DK2 is designed with way more LEDs than necessary, which makes experimental uses like this possible. As a result, we haven't seen any positional tracking issues in our own experiments and demos.

I really hope that Leap Motion and Oculus come to an agreement to include leap motion's upcoming "dragonfly" in the cv1 build. If dragonfly works as suggested with the larger tracking range vs fov, it will be a very elegant and simple solution to increase immersion by having hand tracking built in with the added benefit of a front facing camera.

It may not have the range of solutions like perception nueron but its still a superb cost vs performance accessory for a seated experience.

I recently ordered their oculus kit bundle and cant wait to start testing it and trying out some ideas i have for game and interface hand tracking interaction.

I recently received my Leap Motion mount for the DK2 and wow! The Plasma Ball VR demo is ridiculous! I'm really excited about figuring out if I can pair this tech with the STEM when it gets here next month (crosses fingers). The Plasma Ball VR example is on my short list when I demo the DK2.

Bumpig this as I made another video looking at three of the newer Oculus Rift + Leap Motion tech demos 🙂

I am also showing a 3D printed version of the mount smile

Hope you enjoy it again, you can find the video in the first post, I edited that one.
Cheers, and thanks to the devs for making more of those tech demos! 🙂
