So this is not about star wars though star wars last night proved to be a pivotal point in my anticipation of the upcoming Virtual Reality devices that will be hitting us between February, March, or April next year (if they don't get pushed back)
Okay so the experience in 3D was probably the most powerful experience i have had with a 3D movie yet.
while there were spots that were weak in 3D .. overall it was extremely strong and well done.
the majesty of approaching star craft or even a set piece in a 3D forest was so majestic that it kills me to wait for an Oculus Rift when we get to play games that give us that effect. not just on a square screen in front of us.. but all around us immersed in 360 degree's of virtual reality in high definition, 3D depth, and 7.1 Surround sound. In just the few seconds that the star wars battlefront video was on.. i found myself deep in the Endor forest focused not on the square screen in front of me.. but my gaze was focused off in the distance at the speed and depth that a speeder was flying away from me through those same forest... it was profoundly different than the way i look at a flat 2D monitor... and it was breath taking...
I have watched movie after movie of people playing around with the Oculus Rift. But last nights star wars was what pushed me from the point of fan to rabid anticipation of the upcoming head mounted displays by Oculus, HTC Vive, and Playstation VR.
I know that VR will have its own hindrances. but the taste of star wars last night including the commercials for Star wars Battlefront 2 has kicked my desire for Virtual Reality into hyper-drive.
This is not hype. this is not me psyching people up to buy something.. this is flat out desire to dive into these worlds and explore the possibilities that that were on display last night..
I cant tell you what gaming is going to be like in 10 years.. i will tell you that if last night was any hint... what we play now will seem amateurish and incomplete compared to the worlds we get in the next few years as VR and technology it uses matures.
