Is Microsoft trying to stop PCVR?

Microsoft is releasing 24H2, you can upgrade it right now, but what I'm reading it's can brick your headset because Microsoft decided to discontinued the support for Windows Mixed Reality features in future builds of Windows 11.

I was under the impression that a lack of WMR support would only affect non steam and meta headsets, like the reverb G2 and all the WMR clone headsets released several years ago.

Four Rift CV1s, Quest 2, Quest 3.

List of WMR VR headsets (not including Hololens 1 & 2):

Acer AH101
Dell Visor VR118
HP VR 1000
Lenovo Explorer
Asus HC102
Samsung Odyssey
HP Reverb G2

WMR headsets aren't individually listed on the Steam hardware survey, they all get lumped into 'Windows Mixed Reality' but I think the G2 makes up the vast majority. They're currently listed at 3.49% of Steam headset users so not totally insignificant. I believe WMR users can block the 24H2 update and still receive Windows security updates but it may be an option only in the professional version. I haven't really looked into it tbh.

13700K, RTX 4070 Ti, Asus ROG Strix Z790-A Gaming, Corsair H150i Capellix, 64GB Corsair Vengence DDR5, Corsair 5000D Airflow, 4TB Samsung 870 , 2TB Samsung 990 Pro x 2, DK2, CV1, Rift-S, Quest, 2, 3, Pro, Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (10.0.26100)

If Meta AI is correct "Yes, you can play SteamVR games on Meta Quest 3, even after Windows 11 24H2 is released. Here's how:

Air Link or Virtual Desktop:*

1. Use Meta's Air Link (wireless) or Virtual Desktop (wireless or wired) to connect your Meta Quest 3 to your PC.

2. Install SteamVR and your desired games on your PC.

3. Launch SteamVR on your PC and start playing.

SteamVR via Meta Quest's PC VR mode:

1. Ensure your Meta Quest 3 is connected to your PC via Air Link or Virtual Desktop.

2. Install the Meta PC VR app on your PC.

3. Launch SteamVR and select "Play in PC VR mode" (beta).

No Windows 11 24H2 impact:

Since you're using SteamVR and not Windows Mixed Reality (WMR), the 24H2 update won't affect your VR gaming experience.

System requirements:

1. Meta Quest 3

2. PC with SteamVR-compatible hardware

3. Windows 10 or 11 (24H2 or later)

4. SteamVR software

5. Meta PC VR app (optional)

Tips:

1. Ensure your PC meets SteamVR's system requirements.

2. Optimize your PC's performance for smooth VR gaming.

3. Use a stable internet connection for wireless connectivity.

After Windows 11 24H2 is released, you'll still be able to enjoy SteamVR games on your Meta Quest 3."

And still able to play with wires too after the update

Someone was talking about it and it kinda raised a concern on me, but Meta Quest has no worries of losing PCVR support with Microsoft lol

Just to confirm, Microsoft announced back in December that WMR deprecation from Windows would take place in the 24H2 update. This affects WMR headsets only.

Meta headsets (and other non-WMR headsets) are not affected by this update.

13700K, RTX 4070 Ti, Asus ROG Strix Z790-A Gaming, Corsair H150i Capellix, 64GB Corsair Vengence DDR5, Corsair 5000D Airflow, 4TB Samsung 870 , 2TB Samsung 990 Pro x 2, DK2, CV1, Rift-S, Quest, 2, 3, Pro, Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (10.0.26100)

The VR community already has worries of losing PCVR support from meta!

Yes you are right, Meta headset will never be effected over this update. Only the computer brand names headset I believe

For as long as I can remember, a few people on the forum, usually people who didn't like the direction Meta took with standalone, have been predicting that Meta will drop PCVR... it's not going to happen.
