Is Oculus Rift dead?

Mike1304

Every new big AAA-announcement (Skyrim VR, Doom VFR, Fallout VR, Star Wars Battlefront 2 VR...) will be released for HTC Vive and/or Sony PlayStation VR but NOT for Oculus Rift!
Even tons of new Indie- and early access games are released daily on Steam as "HTC vive only" whereas there are almost no Rift-exclusives...
Did I buy the wrong VR-device??? Is the Rift dead?

Inside-out tracking isn't good enough for high end PCVR devices.

i think the new windows 10 (possibly xbox) VR headsets coming from the like likes of acer will seriously be hoping you are wrong.

They can hope all they want. Inside-out tracking so far is useless unless your hands are in view. I still find it difficult to believe that both Microsoft and Sony have shit the bed with regards to tracking, but I guess you get what you pay for.

The Microsoft-sponsored HMDs and PSVR are mid-range VR solutions rather than high end ones.

Samsung manufacture GearVR and sell GearVR and get the credit for GearVR. Oculus gets nothing.

Oculus gets a 30% cut of all GearVR software sold on the Oculus Store.

Except that microsoft themselves (in the developer docs) say that the following can make tracking fail on the mixed reality hmds:
- room too dark
- moving things in the background like people walking around
- flat single colour surfaces (like a bare white wall with even lighting)
- two identical posters on a wall (it can get them confused)

well its not great not a lot on oculus store really when you filter out the crap and stuff your not into playing, also cutting the price down like they have then giving you 7 free games and then now you get free £100 store credit...certainly not doing too well

The Oculus Rift isn't dead but there's no denying that Oculus is in a transitional state. For the next few months Rift owners will be able to play a handful of new titles and the content pendulum will swing wildly in their direction, then it'll be the Vive owners turn to yank out their pubes in anger.

But what then? Will Facebook continue to inject money into the world's third best selling VR headset (PSVR>Vive>Rift) in what's already become a much larger and competitive market, or will they cut their losses and finally shift all focus toward mobile and standalone VR which Oculus knows extremely well?

If I had to guess (and let's face it, we're ALL guessing here cause Oculus isn't talking) It looks like Rift 2.0 coming out in 2019 will be a standalone headset based on the Santa Cruz prototype, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just don't expect to play graphic intensive PC VR games on it.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

The way i see it.. even IF CV1 did end up being the only HMD to come from oculus, its not like the titles do not work on the vive, and so presumably will also work on a future HMD.

The only decision to make really is this generation right now... which HMD do you prefer on PC. if its the rift get a rift, if its the vive get a vive.

then in 2 years time.... look at the market and make the call again.

When TVR stopped making cars.... folk who had a Sagaris didnt suddenly think omg what do i do... my car wont work any more.

(actually that is a crap analogy... given how poorly made they were they probably did crap themselves incase they could not get parts.....Although it turned out ok for them in the end.)

. i'll get my coat!.
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

I guarantee you that isn't going to happen. After this E3, which has been piss poor for VR in genral, Oculus know that they're going to need to invest another $250m into developers to produce AAA quality content because they know that third party publishers aren't investing anywhere near enough money into AAA VR titles yet.

It isn't a surprise tbh because the number of headsets in homes isn't big enough to make it worth investing for other companies. I predicted this a while ago so it really isn't a surprise to me.

There are two steps to mainstream adoption for VR:

1) Mainstream gamers need to invest in VR headsets

This is only going to happen when the price of the hardware, and most importantly, the price of the PC required to run it comes down. We should see this happening when the CV2s are released in 2 years with foveated rendering and the headsets will halve in price ($300-400). We might even see 2 separate SKUs for each headset, one being cheap and functional and the other having a higher resolution and FOV. In the meantime we'll see the prices of both CV1s continue to come down this generation which should attract the 'hardcore' gamers (my guess would be 2018) but the mainstream gamer won't be able to experience the wonders of VR for another 2 years.

2) Mainstream households need to invest in VR headsets

This isn't going to happen until the CV3s are released in around 2022/2023. By this time you'll see the average headset costing $200 or less and being able to run comfortably on the average laptop. Proper mainstream adoption isn't going to happen until then, although major sports events being broadcast in VR may speed up the process.

We won't see the big third party publishers like EA coming up with much until next year when the number of headsets sold makes it worthwhile for them. And until then Oculus will continue to invest money into VR development.

I predict VR as we know it will be dead in 2025.  Since there will be the Oculus and HTC holodecks in our households lol
