Is a Nvidia 3DVision2 Monitor worth it until CV1? Advice plz

Hi guys I am gaming on a 3D TV and I hate it, therefore I have been gaming in 2D for more than a year now. I have the DK2 but that is not obviously ready for online AAA gaming...I am dying on the wait until CV1 is released and am very bored with flat screen gaming.

Is buying a 3D Vision2 monitor still worth it? Seeing as though new technologies are coming out including 4K TVs and HDMI 2.0, is buying a 3D Vision monitor now too short sighted? Should I wait for anything else?

I really want something to tide me over until CV1 and ease the wait. I am looking at buying the ASUS VG278HE monitoir. any advice please....I really want a change and I do not know when VR Direct will be released or if it will even be playable in a competitive multiplayer environment the way a 3d vision monitor can.

I use 3D Vision since a couple of years and yes its good, actually used nearly all the time besides the Rift 🙂
As Cyber said, dont copare it with Oculus - its very different but good so.

If you going to buy it, you may want to get some of your games fix - search for "Helixmod" this helped me a lot to fix my fav. games.

Also I suggest to rather buy a big screen than a small one (for me size matters here) due I believe the effect is better, also go with Light Vision 2 and ensure that you game on somehting like a GTX 580 or better (depending on the Game) - I tried it first with a GTX 560-TI and immediatley had to upgrade due the bad perfoemance 😉

Have fun.

In other games it will vary, but mouse steering feels so much different in 60Hz vs. 120Hz, that it really makes no sense for me to play any online FPP game with 3D Vision.

True it feels completely different and I do prefer 120hz (or higher like 144hz they have out). All I meant was unlike many I can adapt to either without much impact on my kill rate. Probably because I have been gaming since pong and just got use to anticipating where attacks might come from given the environment. Kinda gamer ESP. lol

Also audio ques help a lot with knowing the direction of a shot or other noise. I currently run my monitor at 120hz and with the 970 and my new G502 Proteus Core Gaming Mouse everything is buttery smooth. Do I enjoy it more... hell yeah it just feels better, but doesn't affect my gameplay much... just my enjoyment of the gameplay... if that makes sense. lol

As to your situation. First of all - were you here? http://helixmod.blogspot.com/
(go for a game list to see what's compatible)

I'll check it out... It's been a long time since my card could keep up to newer games so stopped using 3D. It wasn't so much a choice as I had to since I ran out of games I could run at good enough fps to work well. Want to try again though as been thinking about it lately and remember how much fun RTS games were in 3D. Looked like you could pick up the little units! I wonder if it will work with the newer Starcraft 2 I haven't played yet.. Heart of the Swarm.

Also some games just feel like they should be 3D...

Unfortunately you have newer generation Nvidia card - GTX9xx. Therefore you are forced to use newer drivers, and you cannot use "fake 3D" (AKA "we don't want to make games compatible, so let's make our job easier, and to hell with the gamers and their expectations"). It's still better than 2D, but in drivers newer than the may 2014 release, you cannot "hack" the default depth/separation. And some dumb idiot at Nvidia locked it at ultra low value. It hase 1-2cm on my 24" monitor. I play with 10cm. The difference is similar to playing a game on 15" laptop vs. playing on 100" screen.
Nvidia, again, is killing it's own 3D. I was using first 3D, for CRT monitors, back in the days. They threw it out of the window just like they're doing it now with 3D Vision 1 and 2 for LCDs. Oh how much I would like to see the person(-s) responsible for this kicked in the balls for this.
I really can't tell whether it's because they're dumb or they do it intentionally. Both reasons are beyond my comprehension. Why would any company do this to its costumers? And the most valuable ones - the ones that were buying expensive cards, SLI setups, 3 monitors, and the ones that were constantly talking about 3D to their friends and recommended Nvidia cards just because of 3D.
3D was good for Nvidia, 3D makes a huge difference for gamers, and yet they don't want to spend money even for a single employee working on 3D Vision for 2 day per month.
And that's not all. They actively piss off the helixmod community. For months, years maybe. After another driver version doing another step backwards (locking the fake 3D), after constantly braking the ability to work with helixmod pathes - the guys at Helixmod recentyl gave up. 😞
Also, after 6 months I was forced to stop dreaming about 3D Vision support for Windows 8.1 It might still be broken. It makes a horrible stutter (like 2fps, not a typo. TWO fps) and is happening on and off randomly - which makes using 3D impossible.

This could be a problem as I have Win 8.1 also and the newer card like you said. I foresee a day of swearing in my future while I config things to get them working right again. Much like when I had to redo my entire Skyrim install and update to better res mods to work with my new card and ssd. That was two days of annoyance... Looks great now though! lol
Wish I could see it in DK2 to see how much better it is than DK1. Hell give me the CV2!! (yup I skipped a CV there)

For someone like me though on 8.1, with new card and new drivers how long will I still be able to play games in good 3D?
Especially with the community no longer fixing games and Nvidia breaking the existing fixes?

I don't know any answer to you last questions. You'll just have to try. As to 8.1 - I resigned from 8.1 due to this issue a few month ago, so there is a chance that MS/Nvidia fixed it. You'll just have to try - when you'll see the stuttering and framerate around 2-3fps (Fraps will say its much more - 10-20), then you can save yourself much time by giving up right away. There is nothing you'll be able to do, to fix that, besides going back to older version of Windows.
But if you'll try and it will be good for 2 weeks - that will mean, someone fixed the problem. Give us the info then, please.

Also, not all community abandoned the fight with Nvidia (doing fixes) - as seen in newer fixes for Ethan Carter and upcoming Shadow Of Mordor. "Only" the best and most valuable people gave up. There are many followers, but their skill and determination is not as big. 😞
Besides - no one likes every game, so one modder might skip the game that is cool for you, and you'll have to wait for another one to create it. The less people = the lesser the chances 😞

OK, let's get to the report I promised:
I played a few rounds in BF4 and yes - the available separation increased, but it's still far from "wow!" values, I always use.
On 2500K 4,4GHZ + GTX760, I had to use lowest settings possible (without textures, which don't affect the performance) and 900p. It mostly kept stable 60fps v-sync in 3D, but there were cases, where it was still too much for my rig.
As to the impressions - it's definitely more fun to fly in 3D than in 2D. If the 3D was normal (high separation) I would probably resign from better steering given by 120/144Hz refresh rate. But now I will play both ways - when I launch the game to fly - I'll play in (fake) 3D. When I launch to play as infantry or land vehicle driver - I'll choose 120Hz.
I intentionally skip your part about adaptation, since it would result in 3xA4 of text, and to add to that - many of the things that I wrote quite recently in other threads. Maybe some other time then. 😉 Although I wouldn't change your mind anyway. I draw my fun from aiming. I have a hearing problem so audio positioning is something I can only dream about, and I already shoot around the enemies, since the netcode in BF4 sucks that much, that it gives you better score to shoot around the soldier than to fight with his movements etc. Of course the vehicles move slowly, so you can easily predict where the tank will be when you fire a rocket at it. So I understand your point of view and agree with your arguments, but for me, for sure, 120Hz makes bigger difference.
I hope I'll be able to play BF4 using CV1, so it'll be both 90-100Hz and 3D at the same time. I played at 90Hz just to simulate that, and while it stills feel much, much worse at 90Hz v-synced than 120Hz v-sync OFF, it also feels definitely much better than 60Hz. 🙂

I have completely enjoyed my 3dvision 2 monitor. So many games are a ton of fun to play, way better than 3D movies. For example Guild Wars 2 looks great and the cut screen dialogs look amazing when convergences is set so they are just popping out of the screen.
I was going to procrastinate today, but it looks like its going to have to wait for tomorrow.

I have decided to get the ASUS 120hz screen that has the 3D Vision 2 emitter in built. I am also planning to get a single gtx 970 and OC it. I have a 2500k that is sitting on 4.0ghz...so I think it should be good to go.

The BF4 you guys are talking about worries me though as that is my primary game..lol I was under the impression that Nvidia had a profile for it set at "good"...how is this fake 3D and can i not touch the settings??wtf?

I used passive 3D with this game using the EDID override on my 3DTV and I also used Tridef in true 3D and they both looked the same...please don't tell me they don't let me use real 3D and instead it is something like Power 3D that Tridef has for lower end machines???

Hi guys, I took everyones advice and bought an ASUS 3Dvision 2 monitor and a gtx 970.

The 970 is a beast.

I am having some issues with 3D vision however. I get ghosting in games, it is very faint ghosting but visible if you look hard enough...is this normal?

Also, especially with BF4 I get this weird screen tearing look around me gun and the edge of the screen, it is see through and the only way I know how to describe it is, you know the movie predator, how it goes invisible and you can see through him, but it is wiggly, exactly like that. It is very annoying and almost a game breaker...what is this issue? how do I fix it? Otherwise I am happy.

I thought active 3d did not have ghosting like passive does?

You mean crosstalk?
I assume Lightboost mode is working when you use Vision 2 glasses, right?
then there should be no ghosting. Some really, reeeeaally faint one - yes, but only if you compare to CRT motion clarity.
But crosstalk, which means visible "ghost" of left image, visible for right eye and right for left - yes. This is one of the reasons we want VR so much - there will finally be no crosstalk.

As to the issue - it's from non-existent to game breaking, all depending on what you have on the screen.
For example in a race that is during the day - I can see no crosstalk, even when I'm looking for it, but a bright torch in dark cellar in some RGP game, will give you a crosstalk for sure, since it has big contrast, and shutter glasses never block 100% of the light, unfortunately.

You can influence the amount of it by decreasing the contrast, so the bright things on the dark background aren't that much different to the background. But you loose vibrancy.
I personally prefer more crosstalk but lightboost and brightness/contrast almost all the way up (in monitor settings), so I can achieve really vibrant colors.
But if I play a level that has scenes, where the crosstalk is "painful" then I lower the brightness.

I personally don't play horror games (night scenes) so I yet have to see my first game where 3D Vision 2 crosstalk is a game-breaker.

About BF4 - I didn't look for it, so I might have missed it, but I understand what you're talking about. Map is diplayed with this error. Best just go check a proper 3D game, instead of BF4. Trine 2 demo on steam would be a great choice, since it's "the" best 3D game in the world, according to me and many others. Just remember to use in-game menus to setup it right. Sit close to the monitor, go with big depth/separation, depending on the level, adjust the convergence a little to make the scene more "3D" at the little cost of screwing the rare objects that happen to be really close to the camera - and then judge the 3D. If you find flaws in this game, then you can be sure those are 3D Vision related, not game/drivers/OS/settings related.
I said it before, but I'll repeat also this: go with Grid 2/Grid Autosport if you like arcade racing games - great 3D, and/or check Sine Mora (go grab a patch on helixmod page to turn 3D on) if you ever played side-scrolled shooters (like R-Type) and liked it. The bosses in 3D Vision are really epic. You can feel that you're watching a machine that is 100-200m big. Amazing.

On upside your 3D is working.
I've been hunting for over a week now for my emitter. Found 4 pair active glasses though. No idea where it's hiding... 😞

I tried to find one for my friend today.
Where are you from?
I've found a few on Ebay UK. There is one set (emitter+glasses) for around 100£, but I have no info about the seller, so you'll have to check that for yourself, if it's safe.

In my local country (Poland) - also nothing. There are even some mad people offering just the glasses, no emitter, for 540zł, which is a little more than 100£ and around 160$.
Crazy.
As I previously said - Nvidia shot and burried 3D Vision 😞

I'm in Canada... I might give ebay a try, but I'm gonna keep looking for a while yet. I know it's here someplace, I just have sooooooo much tech junk packed all over the place it's like a needle in a haystack. Last time I had it was in front room with the 3D projector before it died. Then ???? I thought it was with the glasses, but found all 4 pairs and still no emitter. I know I didn't throw it out and so far I've found everything including a RF adapter for a Intellivision gaming system, a 3DO light gun, an old Atari 2600 cartridge, original Gameboy, a 16 year old digital camera (State of the art 0.3 megapixels!), my grandfathers 60 year old pack of nudy playing cards, and a 40 year old Tribble that's seen better days... I know if I buy one I'll suddenly find it in the weirdest place like behind the fridge or stuck between the cushions of the couch...

HUmmmm...

Nope... not between the cushions... Dammit...
