Issues with last Oculus Desktop 47.0.0.264.341 (47.0.0.264.341) (december Update)

ExpHub1

since last week I was able to play perfectly fine on Assetto Corsa with my Oculus Quest 2 with my PC (Ryzen 5, Nvidia 970 GTX Video Card, 16gb Ram).

Last week I was asked to update the Oculus App on  my PC. After the update, the Oculus App forced a reboot on my device, I saw a little progress bar different than the usual one (I guess a firmware update or something like that), and after this update my gaming system is basically screwed up.

Since I installed the update,  I can no longer use "Oculus Quest" as Rendering VR engine, because it has stuttering, artifacts, distorded images and is slow as hell in general, while, on the other hand, if I choose "OpenVR" as rendering engine, everything works (not as smoothly as it was, but it runs at least). From my past experience, OpenVR is generally slower and has worse performance than the native VR rendering.

On both modes, my PC monitor (which is mirroring the VR streaming) has black frames every one or two seconds more or less. As long as you play, it keeps blinking with black frames regularly every one or two seconds (never did that before the update).

So my suspect is that the update screwed up something on the Quest Engine. For me it's not possible to play anymore, and there is of course is no way to downgrade the firmware or to install the previous Oculus App version (as usual nowadays.. once you update, you are screwed as it is a one way path... Nvidia had to learn that the hard way so over the course of time arrived to a solution to provide a way to perform a complete uninstall and a reinstallation of older drivers version).

The problems that I have are currently: very bad and slow performance iin general. Impossible to play with Oculus native rendering, barely possible to play with OpenVR (with occasional stutters and the annoying black blinking on the monitor screen). On Oculus rendering, in particular, if I turn quickly left and righ my head, images become heavily distorted, sometimes i have flashing inside the visors (like it skips some rendering frame), sometimes I have visual artifacts, so it's basically a nightmare. Using OpenVR everything works better to a certain extent, more or less, just slower and with worse performance.

I am using latest Nvidia Driver, latest Oculus Software and latest firmware on my headset

I already tried unistalling and reinstalling Culus desktop software, restore default graphics settings on my Quest 2 via Oculus Desktop Software, removed and reconfigured completely my Quest 2, tried also with a bunch of different Nvidia Video Drivers and different video settings. Nothing works, I always have the same issues, so looks like the problem is in the rendering engine or the updated firmware that changed something that was working just perfectly fine until the update was deployed.

Hey ExpHub1, totally get your concern with the sudden display issues when using Air Link. It's one of the coolest features and we want to make sure it gets back into working order for you! Considering that you have already tried so much troubleshooting, let's make sure that you are doing the factory reset properly by following these steps:

  1. Turn off your headset.
  2. Hold the power and volume (-) button on your headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
  3. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Factory Reset and press the power button.
  4. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

If the issue still persists after trying this, please gather your oculus logs and send it over to our Online Support Team so that they can take a deeper look into the specific cause of this issue. Here's how you can find your logs:

  1. Find your Oculus installation directory (C:\Program Files\Oculus if installed on the primary hard drive).
  2. Navigate to Support and then oculus-diagnostics.
  3. Double-click OculusLogGatherer and wait for an executable to appear.
  4. Select Get All Logs.

Hi

first of all: Thank you for answering my message.

Secondly, I have 2 questions.

1) I'm not using AirLink. I'm using OculusLink, with Oculus Original Link Cable. Is this relevant? Do I still need to factory reset the headset?

2) I've a couple of apps installed into the headset, as I use it also standalone. In particular, for a work-related project, i've a closed beta application. This app is not still available in the app store, as it is still a closed beta. In order to install it I had to accept an invitation that was sent to me by the developer. Will I be able to install it again clicking on the same email (as the application is tied to my account) or they will have to invite me again because the link in the email has some expiration timer? Will the factory reset erase all my internal apps and configurations?

I'm just trying to be prepared in advance to any issues that may occour should I proceed with the factory reset.

Thank you.

Thanks for clarifying, EXPHub1. If you are using a Link Cable, you may want to check that your USB drivers are up to date as well. If this does not bring you progress, please continue with the factory reset. You can cloud back up to make reinstallation easier by:

  1. Put on your headset, then hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu. When Quick Settings appears, select it to open the Quick Settings panel.
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select System, then select Backup.
  4. Select the toggle next to Cloud Backup to turn Cloud Backup on or off.

Keep us updated on your troubleshooting journey!

Try disabling HEVC

Run this comand in CMD, no admin needed

reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "HEVC" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f

Too remove this flag if necessary

reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "HEVC" /f

Changes applied after Oculus Service restart can be done in OculusApp/Settings/Beta Or in debug tool

This is temp solution, but it's at least semething if it would help.

Also there is reports of soe render issues using Oculus link (Doesn't matter Cabel or Air Link) then quest renders only half of image, this bug is present in release v47. To fix contact support, they should send oculus Firmware update file with fix, IF that's similar to what you having it might help

Hi OculusSupport.

I have one good news and one bad news.

The good news is: I proceeded with the factory reset on my Quest 2, reinstalled all apps using the Cloud Backup as you suggested, enabled Oculus Link, launched an Assetto Corsa session and booom! Everything fixed, Everything working flawlessly and smoothly, finally, using Oculus Native Rendering Engine.

The bad news is: I closed the session, ran some errands, came back to my PC a couple of hours later, relaunched the game and, unfortunately, all the previous issues came back again.

Looks like the factory reset did something, as I was able to play without any issues on my first gaming session. From the second one, unfortunately, the issues come back.

I hope my tests can help you better figure out what is going on here.

Hi  HomidWay

Thank you for your tip. Unfortunately I ran out of time to test your workaround , and I won't have the possibility to test it during this week. I will try it next weekend, and let you know if it works.

Hey ExpHub1, that's not a problem at all as everyone troubleshoots at their own pace! If the issue still persists after trying that, it would be best to gather your oculus logs and send them to our Online Support Team so they can read it to determine the best course of action from this point forward. Here's how to collect the Oculus Logs:

1. Open the run window (Windows key + R)
2. Enter and run: C:\program files\oculus\support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusLogGatherer.exe
3. Wait for the executable file to pop up
4. Select logs for the last 24 hours
5. Wait for the log collection to finish. It should pop up a Windows Explorer window at the location of your newly collected logs.
6. It automatically generates a zip file and copies the zip to the clipboard so you can paste it to your desktop
7. Attach this zip file to the next support ticket you open here
