Just got back from Best buy here in Atlanta on Peidmont road. The only store in Georgia to have any rifts.
They had 3.... I was number 4 in line. Now, I am glad the guys in front of me got their Rifts since I already have a DK2 and they did not have the DK1 or DK2 so now they get to experience VR, So I'm happy for them, but really.. 3 units.. for all of Georgia. You've got to be kidding.
I have pre-order still but Oculus has really destroyed any customer faith in this whole botched process. I'm sure other people wasted time and gas to leave empty handed also.
I dont really see a path for Oculus to repair customer relations at this point.
In fact there was a forum thread right here that said Best Buy had been selling all their Rifts online long before anyone got a chance to make a trip to a retail store. So unless you tried ordering online odds are you didn't come anywhere close to number 4.
And that's assuming the retail employees didn't buy them out themselves, which is something better left unchecked...

Really? Because right now the store pick-up option on the Best Buy page says coming soon.
The lady at the store that talked to us said they usally do not turn on the portal for ordering when there are big events till after the event. Ie: people waiting outside the store get them first. Suposedly.
My store told me that they would have about 4 to 5 in stock. It was first come first serve per the manager. So I got there at 2:30am and there was no one in site. But because I'm fighting a nasty cold and it started raining I decided to just wait for my pre-order which is expected to arrive from 5/9 to 5/19. I was also worried that they would try to bundle in a computer I didn't need. I bet that if I stuck in there I would have got one. Oh well!
I'm not surprised by the fact that you were unable to get one. I am surprised by the fact that traditional line-ups actually granted a Rift to a lucky few. I fully expected these to be scooped by 'undisclosed' reservations, rather than being first-come-first-serve.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
