https://forums.oculus.com/community/discussion/comment/529474#Comment_529474 Kevin's recent thoughts on open source issues and OC4.  Cyber, although I was banned from the thirsty bear oculus after party at GDC 14 because geekmaster said palmer was telling people I would "spit in his face" (slandering my character without knowing me - I saw palmer at many conferences and never once spat in his face)  Will I be welcome at OC4 if I were to put in a request?  It seems OC4 is going to be a pivotal point in Oculus history and I love to be part of history.

So I asked Cyber in another thread if he agreed with palmer, was the leep vr help I gave in cyber's opinion the birth of the rift, because palmer said it was, and I just want to know if cyber agrees or disagrees with palmer.  Its a simple yes or no question.  Please cyber treat me with honor and respect like I try to treat you and answer the question and don't dodge it.  So lets go down the rabbit hole Alice because many people may not understand what Kevin is saying on this whole OPEN SOURCE issue that he talks about and I would like to be corrected if my memory of history is incorrect.

Palmer promised the original Rift as an "open source" project for kickstarter. His post about the subject at mtbs3d claims he only expected to make a little pizza and beer money. I was present during the original shenanigans on this. Palmer set up a webpage for the original 100 people that were going to get the original kit. I went to this webpage, and in the comments of this webpage was a company representative that had been working on imu trackers (for space satellites perhaps?) that had a 1000hz update rate. This was FASCINATING to me and why I remember it so vividly. Carmack only had a 250hz tracker (and only then by special request because the company natively only had a 125hz version) so in the comments where this person had a 1000hz tracker I tried to contact this company to buy some of their 1000hz trackers. The next day I went back to palmer's webpage and the whole page had been removed.

So some seem interested in timelines, I am too. Up until the DAY of the kickstarter, palmer did nothing to tell anyone that it was not going to be OPEN SOURCE as he originally promised, only on the day of the kickstarter did it seem the terms had changed. So many people were doing things for the project, giving FREE help, free feedback, free who knows what else to Palmer for this PROMISED open source kickstarter. Palmer promises open source HMD, april 15, 2012. http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=140&t=14777 Oculus VR created june 2012. - so no one was updated who were doing FREE work for an OPEN SOURCE oculus rift project for months, why does palmer get a free pass for this? Kickstarter launched August 1, 2012, with NO OPEN SOURCE. How much money had palmer lined up in between these dates? Tales he sold about OPEN SOURCE knowing full well he had NO INTENTION of open sourcing it, because he had formed a company with iribe and was lining up investors?

Kickstarter could have been a good thing, but palmer's sillyness had to bring more darkness and corruption to something that could have been good for mankind perhaps?  Geekmaster told me after palmer's misuse of kickstarter to line his own pockets (as well as issues with virtuix, six sense - etc) that he no longer has trust in crowdfunding, and what a damn shame that is that a few greedy sociopaths ruined something that could have done a lot of good for mankind.

I have posted a video by Jaron Lanier elsewhere on this board, in it he is talking about how no big money people in silicon valley will invest big money with you UNLESS you can show how you can CLOSE OFF competition.  Create walled gardens.  Enforce Patents to destroy any competition, etc etc - this is the PROMISE that perhaps kickstarter and others offered the rest of us, a way AROUND the capital masters that want power and control over the rest of us.  I want to tie in a lot of other thoughts into this idea, but Cyber has warned of too much drift for the community might confuse them so I will live this here and start a couple other threads to make other points.

I do want to add as a facebook shareholder, I don't like when certain people tell lies and deceive the company I own and hold stock in.  After studying a lot of the trial testimony, I think mark z got fooled and lied to like so many other people and he should not be held accountable for trusting in some people like others of us were also fooled.  http://time.com/39271/oculus-facebook-kickstarter-backlash/  This was a good article on people's outrage that facebook had acquired the company.  Originally I had felt outrage too, but looking back on the recent trial, it seems iribe and palmer lied to mark Zuckerberg and I may have been unfair with my outrage.  Time will tell.

If it was free work then why ask for something in return? Also, it isn't wise to contribute free work to an open source project until it is actually officially Open Source. Unless you are fully prepared to accept a future decision for the software to become part of a Closed-System.





What's done is done. Palmer sold the company to Facebook and is now no longer an Oculus employee. Besides, any claims you think you have to "original work" for the Rift have been trumped (pun intended) by ZeniMax.

I am not trying to make claims for purposes of legal reasons.  As a facebook shareholder concerned with my investment however I am concerned that certain "executives" are still employed at Oculus and until their total purge we are still faced with bad elements.  It took YEARS to get palmer out of the organization, I feel that should have happened much quicker.  Kevin brought up how Iribe was telling people that he had solved "motion sickness" and that this error would do harm long term to Oculus/facebook, and hurt my investment.  I don't like for people to lie and hurt my investment, even CEO's.  One point of speculation I will ad is that a person associated with google told me that google was going to offer 5 billion for the company, but they took 2 billion from zuck because he had much more LENIENT terms on keeping current management in place, people like nate, iribe, formerly palmer, etc.  Facebook shareholder should not want executives employed at this company that will hurt our investment and should advocate for their removal.

Except the SOURCE WAS RELEASED. Before sdk 0.4 (DK2) we had all the source code for the rift publicly available.

Yes, they changed it to half open and half closed, but we did get full DK1 source code.
