Looking for CPU upgrade suggestions

I'm currently running an AMD FX-6300 6 core 4118 Mhz CPU.
With AMD R9 290X Gpu.

This was fine with the DK2 but it's struggling with the 90fps for CV1.
I can get the 90fps but it stutters a little and drops quite low in gfx intense areas.
I'm pretty sure it's due to cpu bottle necking.

I
know the recommended cpu is an i5-4950 but was wanting some input from
you all as to something that would future proof me a little more.

I will have to upgrade my motherboard as well as mine has the old AM3 socket.
Was thinking about a Gigabyte GA-Z170x gaming 5 board but can't decide on a suitable CPU.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Well, the GPU is getting a pretty good workout...90-95% means it's pretty much working as hard as it can. With 70-75% on the CPU, you don't have much leeway there either. While you do have multiple 'idle' cores, the issue is there are plenty of games that are still highly single threaded or even when "multi-threaded" they rely on a primary thread. And anytime there's a spike in core 1, you should feel it.

I don't know how your new USB card will affect it... my guess is increase the load on the CPU slightly.

That said...

At your current software settings, you'll probably see some benefit out of a new GPU... but won't be able to make the most of the new GPU without a new CPU as that would most likely max out on single/primary threads of apps/games.

Maybe it's time to consider buying a new PC altogether (or at least CPU/GPU/motherboard/RAM), then you can get USB3.1 built-in, on the motherboard (and return the USB card).

Thank you so much for your feedback @Goobers .

I think you're right. Time for a new pc. I'd be practically there anyway upgrading all those components.

The gutting thing is, I bought this PC in 2014 purely for VR not knowing (as any of us really did) what was really going to be needed.
I already had to replace the GPU and PSU for the DK2.

I think a whole new setup would be best. It would save the stress of a possible 2yr old HD failure too. (Which was actually what caused me to by this pc in the first place lol)

I'd go for the 6700K aswell. That's what I run with an Asus Maximus VIII Hero motherboard and it works great.

That's a really nice rig 🙂

Yeah, that is a great rig.

Just intel i5 6600k or 6700k (or whatever new models similar to those Intel offers now). Not much choice actually.

Casual VR - 6600 non-K
Seriously want best possible PC VR - 6600K is the minimum, buy 6700K if you can afford it. More threads doesn't help much in VR (at least as of yet, who knows what will happen 5 years from now) so don't bother looking at 6-10 core CPUs.

There were some CPUs from as far as 5 years ago, which meet the Oculus's requirements, and exceed those by a lot after some overclocking, but recently someone here created a topic stating Oculus software installer is written is such a stupid way, that it just compares the CPU to the data table it has and that's it - if not in the table = you won't install your Rift at all.
I think that thread ended up unanswered, so can't say what's the situation now.
edit: to better explain it: It can not matter much that the CPU has all the intruction sets required or that it is fast enough, it's not in the table - it's not supported.
BTW. If anyone knows if it's still true or not - please tell me.
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

Hey mate,  I just upgraded my system with those exact same components plus upgraded my 980Ti to a 1080.  The mobo is sweet and the 6700K oc's nicely to 4.7ghz.  Only extra thing I put a Corsair all-in-one cooler H55 on the cpu.  So that system you bought with the upgraded mobo will run nicely, though for that price he should be giving you a 1080 rather than a 980Ti going on prices here in Oz but perhaps the market is costlier over there. Anyway good job and the usb ports will be the same on your mobo and work perfectly with CV1.

Great rig but i agree, ask for a 1080 🙂
