The original Oculus Rift touch controllers and even the Meta Quest 2 controllers had protective shields over the back of the hands. Any chance Facebook would be able to bring those back for the MQ3? The reason I ask is because I almost just went full Kyle mode on a door. My hand is fine, just a little bruised. I've only had this happen once around 5 years ago. Back then the wrap around shield protected my hand and I didn't get bruised at all.

What you are calling the shield (I think) is actually the sensor ring on older controllers, containing a number of IR LEDS. The ring caused issues with bulk and controllers hitting together so it's better overall for tracking if it's not there. You can buy 3rd party controller covers on places like Amazon to protect them (and you) from impacts.

It used to be a running joke that if you punched a wall with the CV1 Touch controllers, it would be the wall that took damage. Those things were solid.
But as said above, it's really a tracking ring. The Rift-S and Quest 1 controllers had very flimsy tracking rings, they broke far too easily. The Quest 2 was better, but not as good as CV1.
Only the CV1 had the ring go around the hand instead of sticking out the top.

Hey there, @kinkeadus, @kojack, and @user_901925786032222, thank you all for reaching out about this. Firstly, here at Meta Quest, we take health and safety seriously. Please reach out to the support specialists with any issue where an injury or any such issue occurs as soon as possible. You can always reach out and create a support case here:
As for your suggestion concerning the tracking rings, we can completely understand where you are coming from! @user_901925786032222 is correct that there are many 3rd party options for controller covers and grips, just be cautious of potential tracking issues when shopping around. As for Meta bringing back something similar in future controllers, we think that this is exactly the sort of thing you might want to post over in the Ideas forums. That space is someplace the engineers look closely at when creating updates and implementing new features:
Head there, and make a post about this, or look around and you may find a thread about this already to add your voice to!
