Meta Quest 3S "Night Vision toggle"

The.LoganMan
Honored Guest

Recently I brought up the idea of "Toggleable Night Vision" to Meta, as the Meta Quest 3S already has the hardware needed to create consumer level night vision

The built in IR Floodlights on the Meta Quest 3S are not just a gimmick that can improve tracking in low light
conditions, but are a gateway to major innovation within the VR/MR/AR space.
Using the built in tracking cameras & IR floodlights Meta could potentially create the first ever headset
to have fully functional, consumer level night vision without any external devices.

This could revolutionize how VR tech advances and performs, and could provide many different features that could suite the needs and desires of a variety of different users.

Some Examples of what this technology could be used for:

● Navigating Dark Environments, including Workspaces without needing to take off the headset
● Playing Mixed Reality / Augmented Reality Experiences in the dark
● Potential for new experiences (such as Horror games) that could use darker environments
● Hobbies (Camping, Hiking, DIY in the dark, etc)
● Corporate (AR Navigation, Construction in Low Light, Backstage management, etc)
● Tactical (Military & Law Enforcement, Emergency Response, etc)

As you can see, this technology being added could be a gateway to nearly endless
potential opportunities. Ranging from just simple casual use to corporate use and eventually full
blown military operations once the tech evolves to be less detectable.

Anyway, this is my conclusion to the post. If for any reason you need to contact me, feel free to reach out at my email: loganmccaskill69@gmail.com.

However, if you have an idea or want to get involved with the project, please contact Meta directly. I'm just a 15 year old who came up with this idea, there's no corporate affiliation on my end. I'm simply contributing to a potential project, and I would love to see it become a reality.

I forgot to mention, the night vison would be toggled by clicking the Action Button on the headset.
I would imagine having an option to set different options for the action button somewhere in settings.

It would depend on how bright the IR lights are.

The Leap Motion has the same thing, IR lights to aid with tracking by illuminating your hands. But they are nowhere near bright enough to light up a room, because if they were they would overexpose your hands. Plus too much IR light would make the IR LEDs on the controllers harder to detect.

Although I don't have a Quest 3S so I can't test it with my IR cameras. So who knows.

In theory you could always add your own IR floodlight, they are pretty cheap on Amazon, although most don't seem to be battery powered.

They seem to have a reasonable amount of brightness whenever I tested the light with the Quest 2 pass through on, I could walk out to my living room in the dark and see almost everything pretty easily.

So I have pretty high hopes if they decide to add it
