Meta has renamed the Quest's operating system to Meta Horizon OS and they are opening it up to third party VR headset makers.

Starting off they are partnering with Asus to make a Republic of Gamers performance VR headset, with Lenovo (who helped design and build the Rift-S) to make an entertainment/education/productivity mixed reality headset and with Microsoft to make a limited edition Xbox inspired Quest.

It would be nice if the Asus one had more of a PCVR focus than the Quests, having actual display port instead of Link.

Everything mentioned here looks really cool and interesting! I can't wait to see what devices come out of these partnerships and what their capabilities are.

It's interesting that Asus and Lenovo are getting back into VR after Windows Mixed Reality (forced to use MS' poorly designed software that was almost unsupported).

This was a super exciting and unexpected announcement but having now thought about it more, it makes sense.

Could we ever have the perfect all-in-one that is suitable for all activities?  I don't think so, so having separate headsets/glasses might just be the solution.

Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3

Yeah, sounds like a good move, the non pro Quests probably come as close to pleasing everyone as any headset could, a few of the PCVR-only brigade don’t like it so maybe they’ll have something else to appreciate.

Edit: Although, if it’s Meta’s OS, that probably means we’re just talking about stand-alone or dual mode headsets here.

The Pimax Crystal Light looks promising but their history of delivering on promotional promises isn’t the best. The Rift-S is still the master of comfort so I’ll definitely be taking a close look at what Lenovo come out with.

The republic of gamers vr sounds cool I wonder what it will look like and what it has to offer!

The Asus ROG headset rumours seem to be gaining pace lately... maybe indicative of a release soon?

With the Quest Pro no longer for sale, the time could be right. Eye/face tracking, improved screens etc. I'm wondering, though, if it only really makes sense if Qualcomm's gen 3 chip is ready, to fully make use of any Asus upgrades.
