Need help getting started

Geek45

I am new to VR gaming and computers when it comes to PC’s.  I still have a 13 year old iMac.

I just bought an Oculus Quest 2.  I would like to know SPECIFICALLY exactly what I need PC wise and what other accessories I would need to experience the complete VR experience.

I’m not looking for a ‘bare bones’ PC system to play.  I don’t mind spending more for a computer that will run games really well.

Again, what accessories and or downloads I will need.  Will I need to sign up for SteamVR?

Please be very specific in any advice or guide me to any articles that can really explain in detail what is needed.

Thank you so much in advance for any help you can give.

First you will need a pc; see link below for supported hardware.

ideally to start with the following

3080 or 2080 super 3090 if you have the cash to justify

i7-9600k minimum

16 gig ram min

a lot of usb 3.1 ports

accessorires

link cable usb 3.1 type c or type a to c or quest official

wifi 6 router (if you plan on doing wireless)

downloads

quest pc app - free

sidequest vr - free (you will need a developer account if you plan to side load)

steam vr - free

Thats just the short list

I'll point out that you don't need those graphics cards. I have a pair of Radeon RX 580 graphics cards, and that work just fine for PCVR. I may not be able to do highest settings in some apps, but it works fine. Most apps I can run on high settings though. And they might be more affordable then a GeForce 2080 or 3080. Especially since you'll likely be paying scalper prices if trying to get a 3080.

For Steam VR, all you need is a Steam account. Which you probably already have. It is the most popular digital game store after all.

For an instant PCVR collection that's really large, signing up for Viveport is decent. Not too expensive, and you get acess LOT of games. I'll be dropping my subscription in november (when my 1 year discounted sub's mandatory duration expires). But it's not too expensive, only 8.99 a month if you sign up for the one year sub. Note, the one year sub IS billed monthly. It's a great way to try out various VR apps to see if you like it, before deciding if you want to buy it to own.

Yeah I can still run PCVR just fine off of my 980.

Granted, games like Lone Echo cannot be on the highest settings, but there really isn't any game I can't play on my machine. I think the only exception is: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

I believe the minimum is a 1080 just to run it properly. I don't wanna upgrade just for 1 single title, so I'll play that one VR title when there's enough compelling high-caliber VR games that warrant the upgrade.

Personally, I find it annoying that "min specs" and "recommended specs" listings always only list Nividia's cards. This can make it rather difficult to figure out if a given AMD card will work.

If you don't have a Steam account, then you may want to consider signing up:

Granted, Steam is entirely separate from Oculus. Two different platforms. But using both is great.

I think this video will help guide you quite well:

If you want to go above and beyond, then just increase the CPU and GPU.
