New App Support For Quest 1 ending April 30

On April 30 Meta is making some changes that may adversely affect all Quest 1 owners.

  • New apps can't list Quest 1 as supported.
  • Developers can't add new apps at all if they only support Quest 1.
  • New apps released after April 30 can not be seen or bought on the Meta store by Quest 1 owners.
  • New apps that happen to support Quest 1 in addition to later Quests will have Quest 1 support blocked.

An email sent to Quest 1 developers about this:

It sounds like the store will keep working for existing games, but I can't be certain of that (or how long).

At least they haven't killed off the Rift CV1 and Rift-S yet (Rift-S came out at the same time as Quest 1).

Is it even possible to kill Rift S games from the store without killing all PC games?
Wouldn't that mean PC Link doesn't work either?
Would they do that???😲

Hopefully they won't, but they could.

It would simplify things if they dropped hardware support for the Rifts and just exposed Link, since they don't need to handle external sensors, direct mode video (to use hdmi/dp without windows seeing it as a monitor), PC based Insight tracking (since Quests do it themselves), etc. Games would still work with Link because the OVRServer would still run, but Rifts would no longer have working drivers to connect to it.

(Hmm, I'd better not give them ideas)

I'd be VERY annoyed by that, but considering how they killed off the Go and now Quest 1, plus removed things like Home and stopped putting Rift games on sales, I'm surprised my Rifts still work.

We all need progress but keeping the ability to play all the old games is/would be very nice - there's a lot out there.

I've just started playing Asgard's Wrath actually - loving it.  Asgard's Wrath 2 next 😂 - I expect those to take me a few months.

Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3

Link/Virtual Desktop/Steam Link will be around for a long time.

The wording is pretty specific, other headsets aren't affected so Rift apps (PC) aren't affected, so this is for Quest 1 stand-alone, and only the apps that are identified as supporting Quest 1 without supporting Quest 2 or 3.

Are there any apps that only support Quest 1 stand-alone?

The big deal is Quest 1 owners won't be able to download Quest 2 or Quest 3 supported apps, even if it's capable of running them, so the big question is how many Quest 1 users are there that are still using it for stand-alone... and how many new apps released, say during the last year, supported Quest 1... and how many would have supported it in the future, if this hadn't come into effect?

Going through the top 10 most popular apps, it looks like most do support Quest 1.

So I guess the next question is, does it negatively impact developers to support Quest 1? or does it negatively impact the app? How many devs build in graphics scalability to their apps and how many just build to the lowest common denominator?

Edit: I've had the sense that Meta have wanted to off-load PCVR support for their headsets to Steam for a while now (the app support at least), but have so far held back. Just my feeling.

I didn't mean this announcement has anything to do with Rifts, I just find it interesting that many people keep saying Meta only cares about stand alone mobile headsets instead of PCVR, but both consumer Rift models are still supported by the software and 2 of the 5 mobile headsets have (or are about to) been killed off.

I would definitely be interesting to know how many active Quest 1s there are.

It really should be a developer's decision if they want to support lower spec headsets.
