New VR headset coming - "Totem" (big trouble for the rift)

This Canadian company recently revealed one of their projects that they've been working on for many years. It's called the Totem and from the looks of it, it's going to outshine the Oculus two-fold.

USB output (tracker)
Sensors

2x cameras 1080p
3 axis 1kHz gyro

Playstation controller
Xbox controller
Non-game controls

Unreal
Unity
Havok
CryEngine
Platforms

PC
Playstation 3 & 4
Xbox One & 360
Supported media

All 3D formats, SBS preferred Size 6.6″ x 4.4″ x 5.4″

(One of the features I also saw is called "Real world view" and from what I can tell, it uses the cameras on the front of the headset to see the real world, in case you need to find the keyboard or something.)

Now, this both makes me exited and nervous, because if this is near the same price of the oculus, I might cancel my devkit and make the switch to this. Sorry guys, but I'm being honest here. They haven't released any more information, but they want to release more soon. There is also a link included here.

If all of the stats are true, then it looks to be above everything else, except perhaps for the field of view.

Man, I think this is gonna shake up the VR world very, very hard.
Facebook bought Instagram. How exactly did they ruin them?

This thing is a painfully obvious cashgrab.
No-one has ever heard of this thing before; even though they claim they have been working on it for 9 years.
No working demo-units seem to exist.
A quick image search just returns the same few 3d renders over and over again.
The platforms they claim to be supporting don't make any sense; PS3? Xbox360 Really? How dumb do they think we are?
Emulated Controls feature is clearly from someone with no Idea what they are talking about, it doesn't even make sense.
So far all they have done is throw up a mediocre marketing page with a feature list, some reddit damage control, and announce a date for when they will accept your payment.

I can understand Sony with Morpheus.. because they are going to release their own VR games.

But another VR device without with all this kind of support how awesome can be?

I mean,it's pretty much useless a support with PS3 and Xbox 360 because they probabily are going to never have any kind of native VR games, but just some horrible and weird support(also with a very low-fps)

About PS4.. there are already the project Morpheus with PS Move and Ps Eye to do positional tracking and motion control, that's means Morpheus will be much better than "Totem" on his device.

About Pc.. We have Oculus Rift that have better specs (I'm not sure if Totem has positional tracking), but probabily Oculus will has better specs. The dev Kit 2 is already better than totem but the final version (especially after the facebook acqusition) are going to be much better.

I'm not sure about this kind of "multi-platform" device.

The more the merrier.

However this thing does look suspicous to me.
They claim to have been working on that thing for 9 years.
If they have just done this in their leasure time ok i can see that.
Otherweise beeing a company for 9 years without a product seems ab bit weird 😛

And if they do console support via injection like drivers the experience won't be that great.

However even if it is the real deal i don't see how it is trouble for the rift.
If it gets people intrested in VR and the device delivers a good experience i am fine with it.
Oculus however cann produce tons of harware now thanks to the facebook deal, these guys probably don't have the
financials to do so.

The rift will, based on what we have heard from gdc, also probalby have higher resolution than 1080p.

The front cameras are nice, but soemthing i personally just don't care about.

It seems interesting at first but lower FOV, tons of useless additions rising the price and no real photo even of a prototype keeps me very skeptical.

What I'm afraid of is that this is a scam designed to lure money out of people leaving Oculus because of FB or drawn to VR because of FB using Kickstarter. If it's a scam it can set VR and Kickstarter years back due to people loosing trust.
The advent of computers and the subsequent accumulation of incalculable data has given rise to a new system of memory and thought, parallel to your own. Humanity has underestimated the consequences of computerization.

The thing (beside timing) which makes me doubt them are their claims of supporting all these consoles, it is hard to do it properly on pc with injection drivers. With consoles yeah sure that will be great. Just listing them as if they were natively supported is disingenuous.
Well we will see whether they deliver on their tech promises.

It's pretty clear that their basis for claiming console support is to support standard 3D formats by performing any required distortion in the hardware for the device. However, doing so means that you won't really have any of the interesting features of a VR headset, like head tracking, or a wide FOV or even a FOV that corresponds to a real world field of view (since 3D content doesn't have a fixed FOV or include metadata bout the FOV of a given scene). All you end up getting in this case is low res 3D monitor strapped to your face.

This aside, I'm about ready to call bullshit on the whole thing. The only evidence of their work appears to be renders, a 3D printed 'case' which is based on the render, and what looks suspiciously like some toy night vision goggles.

Yeah, that "prototype" looks too slick to be a prototype. It looks more like a toy they painted their emblem on and glued a USB cable to. In, like, the most awkward place to put a USB cable.

If it's real I'll eat the other one.
