New VR headset coming - "Totem" (big trouble for the rift)

AnotherCrazyCan
Adventurer
This Canadian company recently revealed one of their projects that they've been working on for many years. It's called the Totem and from the looks of it, it's going to outshine the Oculus two-fold.
Spec sheet:
Screen 1080p OLED

Field of view 90 degrees

Connectivity

HDMI input
USB output (tracker)
Sensors

2x cameras 1080p
3 axis 1kHz gyro
3 axis 4kHz accel
3 axis magnetometer
Audio: Surround sound over stereo

Emulated controls

USB mouse
Playstation controller
Xbox controller
Non-game controls

Up, Down, Select/Real World View

Supported engines

Unreal
Unity
Havok
CryEngine
Platforms

PC
Playstation 3 & 4
Xbox One & 360
Supported media

All 3D formats, SBS preferred Size 6.6″ x 4.4″ x 5.4″

(One of the features I also saw is called "Real world view" and from what I can tell, it uses the cameras on the front of the headset to see the real world, in case you need to find the keyboard or something.)

Now, this both makes me exited and nervous, because if this is near the same price of the oculus, I might cancel my devkit and make the switch to this. Sorry guys, but I'm being honest here. They haven't released any more information, but they want to release more soon. There is also a link included here.

If all of the stats are true, then it looks to be above everything else, except perhaps for the field of view.

Man, I think this is gonna shake up the VR world very, very hard.
Facebook bought Instagram. How exactly did they ruin them?

This picture from that article

Is a photoshop.

The lighting doesnt match in direction or color.

Where is the mysterious blue light coming from that tints the angles of the headset but not the angles of the guys face?

And its the only picture of the item available that is not just a cg render.

Its a nice looking headset, but....

This is faker than all the people claiming they cancelled their DK2 preorders.

That's not a photoshop. The blue light is coming from a computer monitor (you seriously don't recognize that glow?) and you can see it clearly reflecting in the upper part of his ear and lightening the color of his collar. It just looks like a shitty pair of night vision goggles (http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/scale_small/0/4109/197343-night_goggle_on_1x20.jpg).

I like how this topic was started by AnotherCrazyCanadian and it's a Canadian company. Methinks this might be one of the 5 guys because this definitely doesn't not strike me as as "outshine the Oculus" product.

It's pretty disingenuous to say you've been working on something for years but then admit that you practically carbon copied the Oculus idea of a split main screen with optics. That's a completely different technology and engineering required than dual screens.

Surround sound over stereo? So this includes headphones? Or is that just a BS marketing phrase because that's up to the control of the game developer, not the glorified monitor manufacturer. Dual 1080p cameras? How much did they want this to cost again? Outward facing cameras for 3D is a niche development scenario unless you plan to make it wireless.

As someone said before, wtf is "emulated controls"? My guess is this is movement axis translated to joystick movement. Terrible idea, trying to rig something to work with pre-existing hardware/software just means you're going to get a sub-par experience. It's better to limit yourself to optimal experiences than to offer the option of a bad one. Console support? At sub ~90 FPS framerates? This sounds like sickness waiting to happen, you're going to set back the entire VR community if you do that.

Side-by-side 3D support? So... this isn't any different than every other HMD that's currently out. Just a giant screen in front of your face. Got it. No way they can hit a price point near OR now that Facebook is involved. This is the most bullshit story I've read on this forum yet. These guys have years to go before they get where they need to be.

Sorry, I'll trust Michael Abrash, John Carmack, and Luckey Palmer to give me the best entry to VR, not some group of 5 guys that couldn't figure out an original idea on their own.

Nice try touting your own product, though.

yet no blue light on the guys face or clothes?

What blue light on his ear? You are imagining things.

The strap going over his forhead is skewed off center.

There is no secondary shadow from the usb cord plug that should be there from the overhead light in the back of the room.

The edge of the unit against the forehead behind the usb plug should have better shading from the unit casting some slight shadow there...same with the idge against his cheek.

Look at the flatness of the shadows on the headset. Total render that was photoshopped onto the guys head. Sorry man, its too easy to spot.

He shoudl have a blue tinge to the sharp angles on his face like nose edges cheek and eye bone rims then if its that intense that its on the headset...yet...nothing...and the blue tinge on the headset is coming from above more than to the side or infront or relatively level with the user's head. Who mounts a monitor that high...an ostrich?

You seriously miss all that?

Besides, if it wasn't photoshop, there would be more than only one picture from one angle.

who posts opnly one small blurred out image of their prototype if they actually have one?

Google search thats it no other similar images no other sizes but that 320 X 266 one.

In the end its fake...I could be wrong but i doubt it.

but the fact that a user named AnotherCrazyCanadian has posted this same topic on a number of other messageboards makes me even more convinced that this is a prank/hoax/fake and all the sites promoting this as the rift alternative got played because they never bothered to check.

The most basic question nobody seems to have asked is why the "prototype" of a VR headset that recieves data to display through a given cable needs those external night vision goggle style lenses for each eye...

This looks interesting, but with respect to what everyone else has brought up... id say it looks a little too good to be true

Straight from the developers who explicitly state they chose now to announce this only because of the Facebook-Oculus deal.

Additional options are always a good thing, but they've been working on this for 9 years and they aren't ready to release dev kit yet. Palmer was still in primary school when this mob started working on their HMD. As much as I'd like to see a viable competitor on the market, if they continue at this pace we won't see a consumer model until sometime in the next century. No matter how good their current prototype is, they have a lot of catching up to do considering the pace at which Oculus have been moving..........

Nine years and only now they release info?

Nine years is a long time to run silent.

Not even Red October...anyway...

Cool Story Bro!

let's see a working prototype.

I rather stick to the titty eating guys. 😄

This smells so much, I can't stand it. You know, like when you get an e-mail that says your paypal-account is restricted and you have to follow the link in order to get it working again.
